In the Future.....

Considering the fact that there are literally million s upon million of Imperial worlds out there, is there truly "only war" in the grimdark future?

What would you say the actual percentage of worlds currently under siege or involved in major combat operations against one foe or the other?

Is it actually possible for Joe Citizen to perhaps live out his entire life in 40k without ever even seeing the 1st hand effects of war.

Would this be more common than one thinks?

I think it would definitely be more common for imperial citizens to be drones in manufactorums, administratum and commercial enterprises, even if there are countless numbers working in various military and naval roles. Even with every economy geared towards providing, ultimately, more fire power for the Imperium, the attendant requirements for civilian life would be huge.

A really great way to get an appreciation for this is reading Dan Abnett's Inquisitor series, which take a step away from the frontline and instead see inquisitors thrust into the daily intrigues of peaceful life in the imperium. It's Hobbesian, but not war.

There really ain't enough enemies, for all of the many imperial worlds to face war, but i think "there is only war" I believe may be more refering towards the large wars and protracted combats which are comparitivly common than current history.

My thought is that currently in the world there is conflicts in the middle east and africa (current goings on i may not be up on). If you think in 40k there are major wars such as the tyranids on the easten fringe, orks everywhere particularly Armageddon wheres there is a giant combat still going on, all of the stuff surrounding the black crusades particularly the 13th. Just to throw out a couple of the more major stuff.

So really in the scheme of things the few hundred thosand people compaired to the billions involved above, i think the ratio is still higher in the case of the warhammer 40000 universe

Technically no, there isn't just only war. But the Imperium is a galaxy spanning space empire beset on all sides and from within by a plethora of forces looking to expand their holdings, kill, cause chaos, consume, raid, and keep secrets hidden.

Likely very low, considering that there are probably tens of thousands of worlds in the Imperium.

Yes, the vast majority of Imperial citizens do just this.

Looks so, since if every Imperial world was in the grips of some kind of major conflict or war then the Imperium would have ceased to be long ago.

The average citizen would see the odd newsreel about distant wars but it would have no impact on his life. Every day life would go on as normal. Figure now, wars going on in Afghan and Iraq; we see the news and the fighting and watch it for a while before turning over to watch the sport. We rarely see the soldiers (Guardsmen) going off to fight or see them returning. You might see a recruiting office here and there...

The odds on you actually seeing a Space Marine are virtually non-existant and will be the source of legends.

So would there be constant war? No,unless you live on the borders.. and then you are in for a whole world of pain and discomfort!

You can't really compare modern conflicts to 40K, if anything 40K is more like a combination of WW1 trench warfare and the vietnam war. Most citizens won't see war however many people are going to be drafted when it's necessary plus allot of effort to going to be put into gaining raw materials for the war machine.

Maybe less modern Afghanistan and more WWII England.

Not so much under the Blitz, but afterward with the severe shortages and rationing of absolutely everything?

In modern conflicts there is relatively little...if any attention or hardship suffered by the folks back home unless a relative becomes a casualty.
