Ok, so i'm completely new to black templars and have no idea where to start. I just got the codex and theres some pretty cool stuff in there, which I don't know how to use :suicide:. Any help and advice on putting together a list with them, as well as any tactics commonly used are much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The basic tactics for the templar are a hammer & anvil type of play. Emperors champ with accept any challenge is a must, and due to a lack of monster killing stuff u are gonna want to get one or two vindicators and/or predators to shoot them down (also works well for transport poping). Power fist melta gun in the squads metal boxes (Rhino's) for a safe first turn. generally speaking bikes are overpriced and so are the jump initiates.
Very few troops can withstand a charge from the templar due to AAC, so get them into the enemy's troops, and watch them shine. All of your shooting should be done through tanks. the dual assault cannon termi looks cool, but is verry fragile for how expencive it is. Hope that gives u a good starting point, and as always Build the list that looks fun for u, as theas things are based of of my exp. with the armey!

I agree completely w/ r9a9g9e. But for the most part in my templar lists i never leave home without a squad of assault terminators w/ mix and match LC and TH/SS cause you really can't compete with lightning claws that are rerollable for hits and wounds. For your long range support Tri las (twin link las cannon and 2 las cannon sponsons) predators or dreadnoughts w/ TLLC and ML are good for your fire support. Also, you're probably gonna want to give everything a transport, a rhino or LRC.

Thanks for the advice :D. I think if I were to go for something to pop vehicles I would go for the dreadnought maybe not as effective as the Las pred, but in black templar really don't like the idea of too many vehicles. So i'm guessing two venerable dreds and a unit of assault terminators with LC and TH/SS like same fiddle suggested for elites. LRC I might use for the terminators, I'll footslog to get around my two of my three Crusader Squads, the set up being 9 Initiates 7-8 Neophytes, Melta and PF in two squads and Flamer and PF in the other. There isn't much I can do to get them transport because of the size of the crusader squads. The emperors champion will join one squad he'll have "Accept any challenge no matter the Odds", the marshal the other and the chaplain the third. I'll get the Marshal a LRC aswell and reduce the amount of neophytes to 3-4 in his squad. RZ should work to my advantage because the Marshal will give every model in my army Ld 10, which means i'll mostly pass the test. If I must I might get a vindicator.

I'm not sure what the tactics for this sort of army would be, but i'm guessing i'll be headed straight for close combat by running my foot slogging troops from cover to cover, Keeping out of LOS hopefully. When I get the chance I charge, I hope RZ will work to my advantage with the foot slogging troops.

Dreadnoughts stay back trying to pop enemy armour, the vindicator advances infront of the foot slogging crusader squads taking attention away from them and hopefully causing some damage before it gets wrecked.

Terminators move up from the left flank with their LRC and go for enemy elites, with re-roll to hit and wound with lightning claws. Marshal and his squad move up from the right flank with their LRC. Don't know how effective this would be so, comments on this basic tactic is appreciated. Point costs for this sort of army is also appreciated I don't have the codex yet :l also should I get the Chaplain and Marshal a retinue instead of joining them to the crusader squads? If so which retinue should I get them? Thanks

EC w/AAC = 140
Marshal Dual Lightnig claws Iron Halo orb of Antioch= 145
Master of Sanctity= 110

Dread: Venerable TL LC Missile launcher Tank Hunters= 165
Dread: TL LC missile launcher (only one can be Venerable so no tank hunter)= 135
Sword brethren Terminators: 3LC 2TH SS furious charge LRC w/smoke= 483

10x Initiates 10x neo: pow fist melta gun= 285
10x Initiates 10x neo: pow fist melta gun= 285
10x Initiates 4x neo: pow fist melta gun LRC transport= 693
total= 1953

I ran something kinda like this, Two land raiders will serve u well, walking will not. other people have Vindicators and theas two units will get all kinds of small arms fire as they will have nothing else to shoot at RZ meas U can not stand on objectives, and Neo's do not benifit from AAC. Put that with a 4+ scout armor and they are overpriced fodder. Other people do not see it that way, but in a 2000pt game people can bring alot to deal with that. Orks and nids do it better & will chew u up, and other armies will move & shoot one group till it dies, then do it to the other one. Not that it cant work, its just I have been on the wrong end of that way to much. Nothing quite like a forced charge to a land raider that u can only glance!! But I rant too Much lol!

Ok then, what type of an army list do you suggest for a black templar beginner? That is versatile and can handle different situations huh? Not that I havn't appretiated you're advice so far. I want to know what you would put in a list.

for a beginner black templar army you're probably gonna want to load up everything you can in rhinos. It can be a little cheese but 2 Land raider crusaders 1 with assault terminators the other with a crusade squad 2 more rhinos with crusade squads and 2 hellfire dreadnoughts is pretty nice. Not sure the points on that but imo 2 land raiders is a must because with just 1 on the board it's gonna be shot at with everything your opponent has and probably get immobilized early on.

I run something like this for 2k
Land Raider Crusader
7x Assault Terms
Furious Charge
Smoke

Land Raider Crusader
Emperor's Champion w/ AAC
10x Initiates
Smoke
Power Fist

9x Initiates
Rhino Extra Armor / Smoke
PF/BP MG

Reclusiarch
9x Initiates
Rhino Extra Armor / Smoke
PF/BP MG

Venerable Dread
TH
LC
ML

Dread
LC
ML
