In thinking about the Eldar Maiden Worlds, does the Imperium do anything similar, as far as colonizing new planets with a longer-term plan, or is it all just plunk down some colonists and let them sink or swim on their own? I appreciate the Imperial model would be grimdark and more of a rape-the-environment model instead of butterflies and clear streams, but still, do Imperial planners actually lay out a long term (e.g thousands of years) plan for Imperial planets?

I guess you can choose as you see fit as the IOM is capable of going for Paradise Worlds. You also on the other hand have the Adeptus Mechanicus who like Jurgen in the Ciaphas Cain-novels who think hygiene only happens to other people thinks environment only happens to other people (unless you have a truly progressive Tech-Priest in charge).

Well the problem is the Eldar and their problem with humans is that they see us as bugs and we have invaded their home. I mean you wouldn't like a cockroach-infestation in your home? Right? Thats how the Eldar regard humans, so sorry they want to swap the Monkiegh and just murder them for no good reason.

Well, the mechanicum can do impressive acts if motivated. Remember the triumph of Ullanor? They used giantic earthmoving machines to flatten every mountain on the planet and smoothing it out for the triumph march.

And I vaguely recall reading of impressive acts of terraforming being attributed to DAOT era humans, a technology now lost.

You are both right! The IOM could create paradise worlds but choose not to, why?

When the eldar Laos the seeds for their maiden worlds they were the masters o the galaxy. They did not struggle to survive and none could stand against them. They simply could wait for that bacteria they introduced to a barren rock to turn it to a paradise.

Now the IOM don't have that time. A new planet must as quickly as possible be turned into a productive center to sid the wareffort. Therefor it is faster to give all a gasmask than to terraform.

I would imagine that there would be some form of forward planning for some planets, at the end of the day the imperium needs food water people aswell material resources so the powers that be would not be able to just rape and plunder every planet. That being said I would imagine it would depend on whether you were in an "up market" part of the imperium, or bordering a war zone or contested region of space, also the "elite " parts of imperial society would like their holiday planeys to go play golf and eat fine food while other systems burned in the fires of war
