Right, so this guy who doesnt even collect 40k anymore, and doesnt even have a rulebook is saying you have to have an infantry platoon in your army to make it legal, but in my opinion you can have 2 troops choices and 1 hq choice to make a standard legal force, so who is right?

2 troop and 1 hq is the set-in-stone rules, yes, you need to have those fulfilled, to call it a legal FoC

In the previous edition of the IG codex a platoon was required, but not anymore.

You can make an imperial guard force without using a platoon, but you stuck using veterans, or penal troops, for all your troop choice picks. It can be kind of limiting.

Can be a good option for low-point games, especially where kill points are involved.

Uhuh, in the old codex the only way to get troops choices (other than armoured fist I think) was infantry platoons (platoon command + 2 squads min) But now you can get other troop choices, like veteran squads, penal legions etc.

In a lot of games though, platoons ARE the best option. Combine the squads of platoons into one massive squad, then first rank fire! second rank fire! with the command squad and you have a crazy amount of lasgun fire. Hell if you don't kill the enemy with all those shots you'll probably give them skin cancer twenty years later

Actually, you still must take a platoon to get infantry squads. Check the note at the bottom of page 97 :)

This is incorrect. Platoon command squads, infantry squads, heavy weapons squads, special weapons squads, and conscripts can only be taken as part of a platoon structure, and not by themselves. if you not noticed it before read the bottom line on page 97 of the guard book.

Key word in your post is 'anymore'. So he probably doesn't have the newest IG codex and is basing his statements on the old codex. Old codex, the platoon was a 1+ choice, you had to take one. New codex, that no longer applies.

heres another question....it says each infantry platoon counts as 1 troop choice...does that include the composition of 2-5 infantry squads,0-5 heavy weapons squads, 0-2 special weapons squads and 0-1 conscript squads?

Yes, one platoon (consisting of many squads) is one troop choice on the foc. This is why guard players can have countless men on the field in normal games.

hell there was a guy who made a 9k point Apoc list for guard, he used up all his FoC minus one Troop choice (as in he used 2 HP 3 Elite 5 Troop 3 Fast and 3 Heavy) that was on these forums in the Guard armylist section :3

his list was 100% legal in a legitimate normal WH40K game (though he really could only vs other guard)

Guard are disgusting when it comes to FoC

Infantry Platoon Squads are just sick XD
