Hello,

Uh so I'm from Melbourne, Victoria and I'm completely new to Warhammer 40k, uh, I found out about it last year but have been too scared to go into the GW in my area. They all sort of stared at me the last time I did.

But anyway I have one half painted Ultra Marine I think, it's part blue, that's all I can really remember about when I got it, I want to start an army but don't know who to play as. I don't know much about the game and everyone recommends reading the guides, the only trouble is I don't understand much of it.

So again hello all I'm nightmaregenerator

Hey mate.

Welcome to heresy!
I understand what you mean about the staring thing, exact thing happened to me lol. I don't go in there anyway, buy all my stuff online, it's cheaper!

If your a total nooby, I would suggest the Assault on Black Reach set. You get around 500 points of Space Marines and another 500 points of Orks, a rulebook, templates, and some other stuff. Get a single tactical squad against a single ork boy squad, read through the rule book and have a small game to get you used to movement, shooting, and assaulting.

If you need to ask any questions then feel free to ask mate.

Oh and don't worry about the special rules just yet, learn the basics first :)

Hope this helps, feel free to ask any questions.

Well I went into Highpoint once and they all stared at me, but when I went to the Melbourne Central store they were really helpful they gave me the first model and showed me how to paint it and such so that was good but a few months ago I found that they had closed, although I did see a store in Northcote and saw what I presume is a Warhammer emblem in a games store in the city.

Horray for more Aussies :good:

I'd suggest having a look through the Games Workshop website at the different races, and pick one you like the look of. A good idea is to also look at Astronomican and 'What's new today' on the site as it has even more pictures and articles there as well.

A good starting point is, as above mentioned, Assault on Black Reach. Even if you choose a different race from Space Marines or Orks, the kit is still beneficial for learning how to play and for test models for paint schemes.

Personally I'd opt to, for starters, choose a race you want and buy the models you like for them, because as much as the game matters so does the hobbying.

Good luck!

So from what I understand so far, I should purchase the Assault on Black Reach set, which seems like exactly what I need but I've found a whole lot of chapters for space marines, I have determined my half panted Space Marine is an Ultramarine.

And I have also been told that Space Wolves are alright as this is what a friend started off as. But then I was also told that Angry Marines are great to play because they are cheap (ie. they get two heavies).
Then I was told it's all about how you play, but uh well I've never played. So are their any suggestions as to a chapter that's easy to play but at the same rate good?

well angry marines aren't exactly an army, they are but not a games workshop one someone made a fandex for them, you can come up with your own space marine chapter.

Explains a few things

That may explain why when talking to some people they look at me strangely, as it will also explain why I can't find much information on them

probably, if you go with any spacemarines i suggest the basic spacemarine codex it covers all the chapters except the very specific ones.
but as grish said check out gw online and find out what army you likethe most.

For just starting (and seeing as you seem interested in Space Marines) go for the standard Space Marine Codex, pick a nice scheme out of the codex you like or make your own. Make a simple all comers list and play with that to begin with. From there you can adapt your army to be more of an assault, ranged or other playstyle.

Once you master the standard codex then you could move into the more specialised Space Wolves or Blood Angels codicies of their rules suit your style of play.

Starting at the standard codex will mean less confusion from Special Rules while you are learning the basics of the game.
