I am in need of help with my space marine army, I cannot decided between HQ choices. I was thinking about cal gar with a command squad just because he is B.A. I tried using sicarius but it didn't really have the effect I was going for, sure infiltrate was handy but it wasn't the in your face feeling I wanted. I have roughly 345 points to spend, so yeah

Its hard to say for sure without knowing what else is in your army. Give us an idea of the usual things you use. This should help select which HQs are good for you.

Without that info the definite goto HQs for SM are captains and librarians.

master of the forge w/ conversion beamer. If you are still using that shooty army then he is a perfect long range. Deploy him far away, and he can lay down the pain with at least the strength 8 ap 4 large blast (and possibly and hopefully the str 10 ap 1)

You could also put the master of the forge on a bike so he is relentless and has more mobility w/ a higher toughness.

Basically 3 HQs worth taking in the vanilla dex, plus 4 special characters that aren't total shit:

#1 Libby: Run him plain, and always take Null Zone, it's an amazing psychic power, fucking over everything from daemons to seer councils to hammernators. For more info on SM powers read this.

#2 Captain w/ Bike: The only version of captain I'd ever recommend taking, and this is mainly for the bikes as troops effect. Unless you're running a biker army skip this.

#3 MotF w/ CB: Already been mentioned, he's not really there for the gun though. Yeah S10 AP 1 is nice, but 6 dreads is nicer. Generally something you take to bend the FoC, he's alright in a shooty list but I'd recommend a lib first.

And that concludes HQs, so basically take a Lib. Good Hunting.

I keep finding myself disappointed by my HQ, pretty much no matter what I take. the exception is Kantor, who lets me score with Sternguard. In bigger games, Kantor plus MotF lets me indulge both my desire to score with Sternies and my desire to tromp across the field with a legion of Dreadnoughts.

chaplain with jump pack sounds like a good choice.

id put a librarian in with one of your drop pod squads, nullzone and avenger or smite. or maybe a captain in the dp depending what you run in your drop pod assault.

Just post up your list and then we'll be able to judge what HQ may serve you best. Although Raptors8th's suggestions are pretty spot on in general.

Hey James,

Look long and hard at the point costs for the special characters. Typically, they aren't worth the points unless you want to run a Vulcan list (and even then....) That 75-ish points can is usually better spent elsewhere if the intent is to maximize your list's output.

eternal warrior is worth the points trust me not getting one shot killed by a PF or crack missle shot or vindicator or lascannon. you see the point you can spend 180 points on an hq that you dont want to get killed or an hq who you are not afraid to run into a squad of marines because a powerfist might wound you but not kill.

I'll look into it but i haven't encountered enough instant death players, so eternal warrior is not a trait high up on my list

Assault termis via land raider redeemer and my standard termis get deployed normally. Grey knight termis? Is that even in space marine jurisdiction?
