Since it has been almost a month since the genestealer cult became available to tyranid players, I am interested in hearing the feedback on how they have performed. Do you think they add anything to a tyranid list? Do they work coherently as a list on their own?

I'm gonna start off with my own experience and say that I love what they bring. I have used them now in two separate games against two different armies and while those game results differed, what the genestealers brought to the table definitely gave the tyranid army more versatility.

Genestealers ally as battle brothers to a tyranid swarm, giving the bugs two psykers capable of bringing the Telepathy discipline. I found that if you manage to roll up invisibility on Magus Trysst, you end up with a near unshootable neophyte unit that can advance unmolested into a position where their mining lasers can reach enemy tanks. Other telepathy powers like Mental Fortitude can be just as useful, as the neophytes lack the Fearless rule.

Invisibility is equally useful to Ghosar, whether joined to Acolytes, purestrains or even the Abberants. Outside the formation, attaching Ghosar to a unit allows them to infiltrate and with the combination of invisibility they are a deadly early threat likely to reach combat in Turn Two alongside the army's hormagaunts and raveners.

The abberants proved fantastic against Guardsmen. In my game they cleaved through a squad with no trouble whatsoever, then lost one of their number to shooting before hitting my opponent's malcador tank. They destroyed it in a single turn. All three remaining were annihilated in the explosion, but I consider that more than worth it.

In short, I run the acolytes in much the same way I'd run genestealers. I run the neophytes in much the same way I'd treat a special weapons squad. The abberants need shielding, but tyranids can provide. The characters can fit wherever they're needed. The Purestrain Princelings can be used in a similar manner to lictors in some regards, but personally I just use them to bolster a genestealer unit by two models, which also allows me essentially to run two infiltrating rending units with a powerhouse character attached.

The only model I have yet to find a use for is the Primus. Mostly because, as he is almost exclusively geared for combat yet only has T3 and a 5+ save, I have yet to find any scenario where he would be useful in a way the other models are not. To me he just looks like an easy character kill for my opponent.

Anyone else have any different experience? Better? Worse?

He has a pseudo-Chaplain ability to give Zealot, right? Stick him in a 30-gant squad to buff them from tarpitting to actually-better-than-guardsmen combat unit! Or, like, the low-level brotherhood hybrids.

(not actually certain that you can join Cult units with Nid units, but... why not, if you treat them as the same faction on the allies chart?)

The zealot charm has not escaped me, but it feels wasted on gaunts. If I stuck with with a full pack of genestealers then maybe I'd have something.

Genestealers ally as battle brothers with tyranids under the rules as intended. And because I don't run the cult formation when I ally the units in, it's usually the primus, the princelings and sometimes the abberants that get left out. I just don't see him as being more useful than the patriarch and the magus.

I'm sure if I ever ran the full cult, I'd find a use for him.
