I don't have the money to attempt this at the moment, but I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on whether it would work/look good.

I was thinking of taking a Manticore kit:

leaving off the missile rack, and adding in the Defense Turret from the Aegis Defense line:

I'm thinking the turret might need some tweaking, but I wanted thoughts and impressions, etc.

Its alot smaller than the FW Hydra and would look a bit naff if placed near a 'real' one.

That said in isolation it would serve I spose, but I personally could not bring myself to use it knowing how much smaller it is.

What is the FW version size wise? more akin to a Leman Russ, or is it still chimera Chassis based?

it's still chimera Chassis based, but the auto cannons are long barreled

the conversion you're trying to make is probably the most common IG conversion there is. It looks really cool, and while it's true that it's not quite AS cool as the FW variant, it doesnt mean it would look out of place. In any case, just don't buy any FW ones and you'll be fine =D
