Any ideas how to imitate the effect for this screenshot (http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/images/4651-3-1236998978.jpg and http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/images/4651-1-1237385526.jpg ) , or otherwise to do a more realistic highlighting effect than "bright lines on edges" or extreme highlighting?

You can use Layering, Blending or Glazing. They all take quite a bit of work and a little practice to get right, but they will allow you to highlight exactly like the pictures with enough effort.

Would using grey/bleached bone for edge highlighting (ala Black templars models with white/mithril silver highlights) work out well?
