Hey guys,

I recently finished my blood angels army.
Obviusly this chapter revolves around close combat more than shooting so I decided I would like to start a new Xenos army wich focussus on shooting a bit more.

My idea was necrons, the perfect tank hunting race and only one person in my group plays it. (dont think this is xenos tho..)

suggestions?

If I had to pick the imperrium I'd pick imperial guard.

Shooty Xenos?

Necrons, like you mentioned, and yes they are Xenos.
Tau, well it's their strong 'suit' obviously.
Eldar can pack a ton of shooting into a few units and still leave room for mêlée specialists
Orks can give the IG a run for their money in the massed firepower arms race.
Tyranids can do a very reasonable TMC shooty list from hell. Not so many guns, but so damn hard to silence.

Really, only the Tau and the Necrons have a hard time in mêlée. The Tau have more variety and are a bit sneakier, but the Necrons will last a bit longer when taking return fire.

Along with MCs, you can also do a shooty Tyranid list with gaunts - units of up to 32 Devourer gaunts put out 64 shots a turn with re-roll to wound. There is a lot of debate as to which shooty gaunts are the best though.
Tyranids also can add Zoanthropes with Warpblast (best AP in the list) and Biovores for reasonable barrage, plus deepstriking spore mine clusters as fast attack slots.
I almost forgot about Gargoyles - like gaunts with jump packs and Bio plasma.

shooty xenos is tau or necrons.

now it depends do you like to shoot and run away (tau) or do you like to scare the crap of you opponent because he shoots you and you just keep coming becasue you dont die (necrons).

Or to put it another way, do you like the sound of Japanese hippie communist techno-fish, or menacing Egyptian undead cybermen?

Hespithe and Maxtangent make good points about the other races, but I think Nightbringer is right that most 40k players would think "shooty xenos? Hmm, Tau" first, and then Necrons; and only then start thinking about tailoring other lists. Fact is you can build a shooty list with any army. But it's easiest with Tau and Necrons.

For what it's worth, I'd say yeah, go with Necrons. Menacing Egyptian undead cybermen are scary. And there aren't enough 'cron players about.

go with necrons. you have vod from lord and monoliths to pull you out of cc if you somehow end up in cc.
use the nightbringer or deceiver for cc.

I am a tau player myself and I would say tau are the better choice for the shooting race they have the best long range anti tank gun in the game and you can potentialy get lots of them you really cant argue with a railgun plus 4 shot weapons that dont need line of site to fire owe and lets not forget that tau also get plasma that does not over heat and last but not least auto cannons that can move and fire with out being on a vehicle. well I hope this helps with your decision good luck to you.

Don't forget to get a lord with a resurrection orb, those things are nasty. Immortals are a good choice to, at least if you have to cash to buy them ($10 for one model is a little pricey).

I used to have a necron army and heavy destroyers would be a must for your shooty army! Str 9 ap 2 weps. 3 in a squad! oh and get a monolith, those things are far too cheap for their capability, but can dish out a bit of firepower, and if you need, you can teleport some of your more shooty troops out of a line of fire...KK
