Hey I don't really play 40k but I love building the models. I want to build a unit of Nurgle bikers for a friend over the winter. I've always loved the tactical (and modeling) idea of using them as a "demon bomb" to come in, get behind enemy lines, and drop some demon spawn to add a little chaos to the enemies' well-laid plans. I don't have a copy of the new Chaos Codex, but heard that bikers are even better than before. I don't even remember how these things work in 40k, so someone just please give me a short list with as few models as possible (I take a really long time to paint them) and all the appropriate weapons, etc. (No options or magnets! I relish the modeling aspect of creating original units) so my friend can use them in his Chaos army. Thanks!

Nurgle bikers are great fun. Have to love a T6, super-fast unit! I'd probably go Crimson Slaughter rules for some of the relics available, but you could save on some points just going normal CSM.

I'd probably build a unit something like this pairing:

215 - Lord w/ Mark of Nurgle, Daemonheart, Slaughter's Horns, Power Fist, Lightning Claw, bike, Sigil of Corruption, blight grenades

206 - 6x Bikers w/ Mark of Nurgle, 2x meltaguns, champ w/ lightning claw, meltabombs

OK so I built it on Army Builder still have some questions:
1) How about an Icon of Despair? I've read you can use Fear to force other fast attack units off the board, may be helpful. More importantly for modeling purposes is this essentially a Nurgle banner of some sort on one of the bikes? Should I put it on the Champion or on a bike with nothing else?
2) According to Army Builder only the Lord and Champion may take meltabombs. Should they both take them?
3) Should the Champ take anything other than one Lightning Claw?

I can't wait to build this! I know that I'm being a little cocky but this is going to be one of the sickest Nurgle biker builds!

Nope, no Icon of Despair. Fear isn't really that useful, given how most armies have either Fearless (or some similar equivalent like Synapse or Daemonic Instability), or And They Shall Know No Fear.

Besides, if you're going Crimson Slaughter, you get fear for free without having to buy a banner!

I like to take the meltabombs in case you end up in combat with a unit like an Imperial Knight, a Soul Grinder, or an Ironclad Dreadnought. The Lord doesn't need them if he has a power fist, which gives quite a few more attacks (albeit without an extra D6 on armor penetration and only AP2, not AP1), but I'd give the champion them, at least. The lightning claw on the champ is really optional, honestly, I just figured it would let him deal some wounds extra if you don't mind the extra points cost.

I have a cool idea for modeling lightning claws so I'll probably put them on the champ. Maybe even a pair. Does that rule about a pair of lightning claws allow double attacks or whatever still exist? Thanks a lot for answering my questions.

Normally when you have 2 close combat weapons, you get a bonus attack. Lightning Claws have the "Specialist Weapon" rule, though, so you only get that bonus attack if you have 2 Specialist Weapons. Power fists have that rule too, so if you take a power fist and a lightning claw you can choose which of those weapons you want to use and still get the bonus attack, though it's a bit pricey in terms of points. That said, it's only a couple handfuls more points than 2 lightning claws!
