Hello Heretics, I used to frequent this board around the release of 5th edition, my handle used to be Siege but I guess I signed up again with this account at some stage that I don't really recall. I fell out of the hobby when I succumbed to ice addiction and pretty much have been lost in the warp the last couple of years. As a recovering user I need to keep myself busy and when I stumbled across about half a dozen of my old Guardsmen, I just felt a return to the 40k universe might be a good idea. I see much has changed since I left so I thought I'd come back here. The guys and girls on these forums were so helpful back then, hopefully I can pick up some more tips and advice as I return to the hobby.

Thanks mate, it's a long road. And that might be easier than you think as I have been considering Chaos for a few reasons, one I think it might be one of the cheaper options and I just feel like I relate to the whole Chaos thing a bit more lately.

Cheers for the warm welcome guys but considering my recent history I think it's best I refuse any offers of mysterious substances from strangers, even if they are devoted disciples of Chaos.

So I was just browsing the GW webshop and wow, I know this has always been an expensive hobby , but jeez, 80 odd bucks for a codex? Things have gotten a touch more pricey I think. Anyway, any advice on turning to Chaos on a relatively average budget?

Ebay is always an option. lots of people are selling off their excess DV models. But honestly you should start small. if you seriously want to get into chaos pick up the Dark Vengeance starter box. Since everything is marines you can easily convert the Dark angels to Chaos (or run them as fallen angels). that right there should start you off at around 1K worth of troops and some fast attack. From there just pick up a box or two when you have managed to get everything previous painted up vehicles and heavy support with maybe a flyer at some point. And don't let your back log build. both @Tawa and myself are prime examples of this and we struggle to get through the hordes of models we have. but your initial investment should only be the codex and the starter box if you are serious. your old guardsmen can also be turned to the service of the dark gods as traitor guards or cultists if you prefer.

Okay cool I just checked out the DV box and it seems like the way to go, Cultist minis yeah!!! Where were they when I attempted a LatD army years ago? Anyway just a few questions, I don't really want a crimson slaughter army, creating my own characters and fluff is a big part of the hobby that I enjoy, so how hard is it to convert the models to another chapter?

Not hard actually - They have no Warband/Legion iconography on them at all, so you can slap any icon on their shoulder pad and they are good to go.

The only Legion I wouldn't choose is Iron Warriors because of their attitude towards mutations, but beyond that you are pretty much open to choose any Legion you wish.

This a thousand times over. It gets pretty daunting and not a little demoralising to look at a mountain of plastic and metal. Bite sized chunks is the way to go :good:

Yeah I do appreciate a good mutation so IW is a no go. I am thinking Nurgle.

That's great to hear about the models, I imagine it will be a bit more difficult with the Dark Angels? I don't mind the idea of having my own little warband of Fallen Angels but would it be codex legal?

The DA minis are difficult, since even if you chop off their shoulder pad DA iconography, you're left with some pretty... clean minis. I mean, taking them as Fallen is always an option, or buying just the CSM minis on ebay-

Anyways, welcome back to the hobby. Even as a devoted Chaos player myself, I have to congratulate you on rising above mere material dependence to grasp for something greater: true power in the eyes of the Gods of the Warp! Praise Chaos!

Which is to say: hey, well done. You have my admiration for kicking the habit, and my support for remaining off it, insofar as you (or any of us) are able.

Yeah, codexes have gotten real expensive, since they went hardcover in 6e... so long as you stick to legitimate and legal avenues of getting your codex *cough cough*.
