I have a few spare points I want to spend on heavy support for my Salamanders list, I want opinions on why one trumps the other

Option 1. Thunderfire cannon

Option 2. X2 whirlwinds

My army is very close combat orientated so I want something to sit back and fire for around 130points

The TFC causes more damage and has the perks of a tech marine (boltsteer defences etc.)

However 2 whirlwinds, not as much firepower but it's another target to deal with and now with the new rule I can sit 2 on objectives whilst providing support fire...

Thunderfire Cannon. You get much MUCH more reliable damage output due to Multiple Barrage rules, and also flexibility in dealing with different unit types. Also cheaper.

I gave my whirlwind away to a buddy so he had a tank in his 90+ marine army, I assume it will be the first of many support vehicles for his masses. TFC (I always mess this up with Toronto Football Club, but don't even watch soccer) for the win!

I've now scrapped the whirlwind idea so thanks for the feedback, however i have dropped a unit from my list now I have enough points for a TFC with 75 points free. I was looking at the Icarus cannon for anti air, it also says it can shot skimmers and fmc. Is this something anyone has had experience with?

I have basically shelved my ADL since 7th hit. Fliers just aren't as scary with the nerf bat hitting Heldrakes, but if you face a lot of skimmers (I'm looking at you, Eldar) it can still be useful for popping some stuff. I heard that you can take what we used to consider upgrades for the ADL individually as fortifications on their own, but have yet to specifically pour over the Stronghold Assault book to find out. Someone put up a quote from the book in some thread I was involved in that said as much.

Can you shuffle the points so you end up with 135? Find 50pts from somewhere and you get yourself a Stormtalon with AssCannon and Skyhammer, which is very efficient at AA work and strafing ground targets alike.

I've pretty much given up on the Aegis Line since it has far more restricted deployment than before and you can't put Objectives behind it without a big risk, so I wouldn't bother.

This man knows what's going on.

I probably wouldn't want a Stormtalon as your sole Flyer though, unless you were playing 1000pts or something. They're very, very fragile to anything with Skyfire.
