Silly, quick noob question. Do Halberd wielders also count as spear men for the second rank attacking rule? If not, whats the benefit of a Halberd? Wouldn't it make more sense to just take Great Weapons?

No, halberds don't get "fight in ranks" like spears. Their only benefit is +1 strength, with the advantage over Great weapons being that they don't make you strike last. The real problem with halberds is that they make you lose your shield bonus, as they take two hands, so it's a trade off, +1 strength, no shield. They can be useful in the right circumstances. though in 7th edition, great weapons are usually the better option. In 8th, however, halberds will probably be more useful, because of the changes to striking order.
