i just saw this:
http://bloodofkittens.com/blog/2016/04/01/network-news-2016-march-gw-market-watch/
what is your read on this?

note the hump leading into AOS and the rapid decline.
this includes what i considered stabilizing moves,
like putting Forgeworld on the main menu,
hinting at organized play, the boxed set strategy,
and though i find them still unrealistically priced, the 'get started' kits.

what is wrong?
imho,
1) their brick and mortar store strategy is broken - they should pump independents and attract direct sales through exclusive freebies with orders, raffles, priority tix to 'flash mob' style warhammer events set up and run by regional staff.
2) their web presence is feeble - perhaps a dedicated social network app? why not a scheduler, image uploader with online prize support in the form of special discounts for finishing a painting project on time, maybe an online 'hot or not' monthly contest, flash git web sales, regional tourney organization with prize support, best indy GW blogger awards, maybe even a scholarship...
3) their community/market development strategy is broken - how about an army recycling program? old metal models? send us your old metal models (you pay shipping) and we will rebuild these armies for 50% off new plastic kits within available ranges. add 100USD to your order and get a plastic clampack character model free. add 200USD, and get a monstrous creature or vehicle free. talk to people. pay attention to the situations that most people live in, today. integration with local people is key to remaining the cultural force that sustained the company as it ballooned.

now, i see the company bought by some equivalent to hasbro or disney,
cuz when i think about it that explains why the rejection of common mythology
that originally strengthened the appeal of the warhammer universe.
pump up the IP, claim the responsibility, have something to sell,
cash out huge with stock now in disney instead of GW, and move to Monte Carlo ...

You're a fool. I know exactly how to save GW.

1. Raise prices of all products by 50%
2. Cut the number of models per box.
3. Sue any store selling GW models which isn't an official GW store.
4. Take a shit on every fan you can find.
5. Increase the price of FW models by 600%
6. Turn every Fantasy model into a Space Marine variant. Everyone loves space marines, so who wouldn't love a Lizard man with a bolter and power armour?!

I'm extremely drunk, but my ideas are still on par with GW's way of thinking.

7. Sell all BL novels for at least $90 per book. Sell novels in seperate chapters.

I'm extremely drunk, but my ideas are still on par with GW's way of thinking.
everything that you have written here is true.
the first sentence most of all.

Rountree is way better than Kirby ever was *cough*Start Collecting boxes*cough*events you actually want to go to*cough*bundle deals that actually save money*cough*, GW still isn't dying despite decades of fans insisting that it's so, and GW makes more money than you so shut the fuck up and sit the fuck down. If the management/directorship are so dumb and terrible, why aren't you running the place?

Somebody has a lot of pent up rage over this issue.
Perhaps you need to take a step back. You know, get away from the computer for a bit. Go outside, listen to the birds sing. I have some incense I can send you. It helps me when the nails are biting.

I agree with this post, a lot. Threads like these are not new, they're tiresome, and meaningless.

I'll start to worry once GW has to do some of the following.

1) does not plan on paying dividends to their stock holders - probably for successive quarters/years/however the stock market works

2) starts firing people who are very important to the company

3) sudden drop in model quality

4) sudden increase in model pricing (like a 100% increase)

besides these four things - I'm not business savvy enough to know that things are being bad financially enough for GW to have issues.

I think it's nice to hear that they are starting to get back into sponsored tournaments/events.

In general though, they have done more harm to their own community/fans/customers in the past 3-5 years than any one opposing company (maybe FFG but I doubt it)

Market value dips can have way more to do with the general state of confidence in said market than the performance of individual companies. Right now there is a wobble in the market that has been causing value fluctuiations accross the boards, GW is simply feeling that wobble, nothing more or less....

this is something that i had considered, too.
consistent with the rest that i had seen.
but then again, the graph shows a rather precipitous drop.
one need not doubt the leadership to see a player in a bad position.
boardgames and gaming generally are doing well.
people miss time together after two decades binging on Internets and cellies,
and many are coming together within structured spaces afforded by games.

what the warhammer universe had going for it was its universal mythos.
originally, it was a synthesis of existing and emerging popular culture and deep tradition.
this is something that is difficult to quantify, but i think that its value was under-rated by gw.
they traded it in for something less valuable.
at least that is what the people who are dropping gw stock seem to be teaching me with that diagram.

I know it's not relevant to the discussion, and it's not intended as any kind of ad hominem, but must you write your posts in what appears to be some kind of attempted haiku?

I'm all out of fucks for GW these days.

I might pick up Blood Bowl, but I only top up my paints from there these days. I imagine a lot of people are the same or similar.

And despite the company's general cuntish attitude to the fanbase, I can't see them going anywhere soon.

Only thing I get at GW are paints and codexes because I like to read them

If I could get the colors I wanted out there I wouldn't even be buying paints there.

I don't feel like buying models because you never know when they're going to decide to squat an army.

"I buy products from this company, but if this company didn't make this product then I wouldn't shop there" isn't exactly a damning indictment of GW.

Yeah, that thing they did once twenty years ago and then again recently with a failing game system. Ever put money into a Kickstarter that fell over? Bought shares in a business that tanked? Used a product that was discontinued? 'I don't want to buy things because one day it might get discontinued' isn't a problem in itself as a mentality, but you have to refuse to buy or own anything because everything gets discontinued or made redundant eventually. Making a single exception for GW is kind of silly, right?

If it was just them saying that they're going to discontinue making something I honestly wouldn't have a problem with it.

But by squatting it I can no longer use that army in a GW store, which is the only place I can play.
