GW are updating their starter paint sets for WHFB, WH40k and LotR each with 8 paints (updated selection, new pots), starter brush, small painting guide and some miniatures (10 Night Goblins, 5 Space Marines or 12 Moria Goblins).

Personally, I'd rather see them update the paint kits with new models then with new paint. Admittedly, they've only really done this as they've changed paint suppliers, but I'd still rather have something different then ultrasmurfs and goblins for a starter set.

Agreed. These items will never be of any use for me but I still respect that they're perfect products for any new beginner to the hobby, providing them with the paints and the most popular/common minis of that game system which makes sense to me.

I think what's interesting is that they are clearly adding to the foundation range... never seen a foundation black before...

I didn't spot that, thats a good move, the foundation paints are really useful and a greater range would be helpful.

I just hope with the move to China for paint production that there aren't any toxicity scares as one of the attractive things foe GW paints has been the safety element since forever, we shall see with time

The starter hobby set for 40k had a pot of Undercoat Black in it when I got it as as part of the Wayland 40k deal at the start of last year... but I don't think it's ever been available on it's own.
Ah, so may be some kind of primer then I guess... just never noticed it before and it has the white foundation cap.

It's not a foundation paint as it doesn't say foundation on the bottle, it might have a slightly different consistency and pigmentation than normal black, all it does is give a cheaper alternative than buying the spray straight up along with the starter kit and give new hobbyists to the game an alternative to buying the starter box set with the hobby starter set and a black spary and shining gold on top of it.

Those look rather Craptaculer.......
I personally don't see what you've got against them? New bottles of paint is about all there is, and they're directed at beginners anyway so the chancesof you ever buying them are slim, so even if there were a reason that they were worse, you wouldn't have to worry about it anyway surely?
