For protection, I used to use Gloss cote, let it dry thouroughly and then dullcote it.
I couldn't get dullcote for a few years though and my airbrush is currently packed away until we get a sparky to hook up some external power outlets (and add the circuit) to the box (house is too small to airbrush inside, so I have to do any spraying outside.).
The spraybooth is almost set up though. It's waiting on the same power setup to run the extractor fan (65,000cfu pickup).
