Considering how most Imperial planets are more or less entire factories and screw up their atmosphere, shouldn't have the Imperium more or less run out of usable planets by now?

Well I read a part of the Eisenhorn book, it says every few years or so, the Imperium controlling the planet release something into the air, which causes a mass of rain to clean the surface, smog etc. . . This sounds like a pretty efficient kit for the Imperium but the rain has side affects. Within a few weeks mass storms and hurricanes appear in other parts of the planet.

yes many planets have been destroyed that way but dont forget this is the 41st milenium I think they can support there own atmosphere.

It is estimated that their could be around 10^7 planets capable of supporting life in our galaxy. I think the imperium has a few more to go. Besides, not all of those worlds have been that poluted.

Technology and oppression are likely saving the day. "Backwards" as the Imperium is, their technology is still much better then ours and they can survive the damage. As mentioned before, they can probably also "repair" it as much as ecosystems can tolerate brute-force adjustment.

Also, the Imperium almost certainly doesn't care how people suffer from enviromental issues from over-industrialization. Unless of course this serves as an excuse for them to slack off from production and requires the Guard/Marines/Inquistion to get them back into line. So the people on these worlds have no choice BUT to survive and desperation can work wonders. And don't forgot, some of the worst planets in the Imperium are prime recruiting grounds for the Imperial Guard. Armageddon and Krieg come to mind as "man screwed up the enviroment" death traps that produce weapons and soldiers in the millions/billions. So, toxic and disasterous hellholes benefit the Imperium more then they should.

Even if the atmo is ruined, I don't think that would stop them. Just have breathable atmospheres within the structures on the surface.

Actually, most Imperial planets are not.

Hive Worlds and Forge Worlds almost certainly have nothing remotely aproaching a breathable atmosphere, but since everyone lives in Hives or other arcologies on those worlds it doesn't matter (at least, so far as in-universe physics and biology is concerned - there would be some very real problems with real science).

Hive and Forge Worlds, while probably the most important, are fewer in number than one might think. Far less than 50% of all worlds, even combined. They just get mentioned a lot because, well, they are the most important.

Other worlds - your Agri-worlds, Feudal Worlds, Ferral Worlds and all those that are urbanized, but not yet hive have perfectly breathable atmospheres for the most part.

One of the supposed problems of global warming is rising sea levels, this worries us because so many of our cities aren't that high up. But I imagine an imperial charter would estimate the level seas would rise and build their factories/cities higher up (assuming siad planets have ice caps )

Assuming the Imperium Terraformed the planets originally to make them habitable, they can probably fix any environment issues that crop up.

Seeing as this doesn't need to turn into a political debate. I'll just say that it is possible that they have encountered extreme weather and extreme pollution, but I would not go as far as to say global warming. "Global warming" is completely natural, just as ice ages are natural.

haha.... i was kinda hoping for that. There is nothing quite like :headbutt: beating your head against the wall a few times. but since you asked so nicely varrius, The only question i had is someone said a political debate? I never realized that science was a political matter... (not trying to start any fires that can't be put out) but back on thread topic it seems unlikely that people capable of space flight, teraforming, and anti grav devices can't fix anything they cause. I mean it's not like there's a race that fucked uptheir worlds and race so bad that they have to float around on giant craft worlds. That would just be silly:crazy:
