I really want to make an army based on turing enemies into spawn. Please help me with any tips, tactics or lists that will help me maximise my chances to make this work.

The only thing you can really do is have a few casters with the ability to cast it and get close enough to try. With a 6" range it is a very limited spell and against MEQ's you only have a 33% chance at pulling it off. That said, you are allowed to choose the target, it can be cast in cc and is cast in the shooting phase so go for the guy with the power weapon/fist and barring that, target anyone with a special weapon or something with lower toughness if possible. Truth be told though, I would never try to base an army on it as it is a hard spell to pull off with any real success, numbers-wise, and spawn themselves are rather useless overall. I would take gift as the second power on a deamon prince or lord but that is about it.

I agree with Wraithlord. It's a good second power for Daemon Princes and lord. But it only works within 6"? Oh boy, I really need to talk to that cheating chaos bastard at club.

In a big game my team mate used it on a carnifex and it was successful  We laughed so hard as his cc monster turned into a three wounds thing

Actually it causes major problems for your opponent. Spawn are S5 with D6 attacks and are a seperate unit. So he has to divide up his attacks to deal with the spawn.
Also you always target the vet sgt, lord, etc. In which case even if it takes 3 turns when it's successful it pays off big.

Against T3 opponents it's especially nasty such as tau, or eldar. I mean it's not the best power but on a whole it's not bad, and is a lot of fun. I used it in a tournament with just 1 unit of 1000 sons, and a sorcerer. Lots of fun only managed to create 1-2 spawn per match. However 1 spawn wiped out an entire firewarrior squad by itself without ever involving my 1000 sons in CC.
Another slapped 2 wounds on a necron lord, Which caused them to lose combat, and fall back, be caught, and massacred.

I completely agree with this.. If you have a decent number of troops with gift of chaos that would end up aggravating your opponent.
