I was looking over my long-term plan for my collection... I was playing around with starting a Tyranid army, but I think that I might just build on my Word Bearers Chaos army. Part of the long-term plan was to add air support. I would like to add a Hell Talon from Forge World.

With this in mind, I would like to ask the forum members if anybody has played with air support in a game and also if anybody has bought the Hell Talon.

I guess I am really looking for input as to whether or not getting a Hell Talon will be a big waste of money. It is an impressive looking model and would be fun to paint and can be fielded as a heavy in a CSM army... But if it is useless on a battlefield then it becomes a shelf warmer. A expensive one at that.

I was also considering adding a platoon of Renegades in a Valkyrie. That might be a better allocation of cash. This is why i am looking for input.

I'd appreciate any and all input...

Well Its a great model no doubt! Now on the battlefield its decent. I do think its situational thought its not great ALL the time. I mean I have seen it used in games and If I played apocalypse I would get a couple of them.

But its just the same as every other unit in this game if you put it against something that is the idea counter unit well its going to fail lol.

So its really up to you what you want to do at the end of the day.

Cheers,

What is the Hell Talon packing anyway? Looks like a real light fighter, thus very light weapons.

I think that you are looking at the Hell Blade. It is a light air-superiority fight. It has twin-linked Autocannons I believe.

The Hell Talon is a fighter-bomber. It mounts, TL-Autocannons, TL-Lascannons and 8 Bombs.

I am just trying to see if this will be a waste of time and money or if it would be a worthy addition to my army.

IA6 Pt.2 - Hell Talon:

Basic wargear is TL Lascannon and single AutoCannon. Plus 8 Bombs.

Kick me if its against the rules to say :p

I've heard they are useful if you use them properly; usually in pairs, i can't say from experience, only from talking to other Apocalypse players.

That raises an interesting question that I had not thought of....

Is it an Apocalypse Only unit? From what I read they were a HEAVY choice. Am I wrong??

Few units are 'Apocalypse Only' As alot of Units are used in friendly games of Standard 40K as well as 40K Apocalypse.
I know of no one who uses them in standard 40K, or anyone who would allow them to be used in standard 40K.
I dont recall seeing them in my copy of the CSM Codex, though i could be wrong. Check your copy.
Long story short: I would say Yes, they are Apocalypse only.

As with most Forge World models, the Hell Talon is an optional/experimental unit- it CAN be used in "normal" games of 40k as long as you have your opponent's permission.

As for it's actual USE on the batlefield, it's not bad. I added one to my Thousand Sons, and the bombs are quite useful for taking out groups of lighter-armored infantry like IG, Orks, and even Fire Warriors. I decided to go for the Lascannon mount on it for harrasing enemy armor. It does suffer versus the "fighters" of other races, but that's what the Hellblade is for- Talon protection. also, for a FW piece, it was remarkably easy to assemble (save the canopy... always fun glueing perspex to resin...).

Flyers with Bombs are good. In Apocalypse, I always take the Disengage and Rearm Asset. I generally only use two flyers (the two Marauders), as the others I find lacking in hitting power.

If I use the Bomber, I can put out 36 Bombs, using the Apocalypse Template during a battle, but not much else (2 TL HB's and a TL Lascannon isn't much). I much prefer the Destroyer - only 12 bombs (using Rearm), but it can also put out a decent amount of anti-heavy infantry firepower with it's TL Assault Cannon (TL+Rending is always good), and 3 TL Autocannons). It has a TL HB and 8 Hellstrike Missiles if that isn't enough either.

Personally - go though go for the Valk/vendetta+Veterans. you can always use them in a Guard Army, and are always effective. If you're set on Aircraft though, the Vulture is extremely decent for it's cost with TL Punishers or 2x Rocket Launchers, and can go in an Elysian list.

My advice is to ignore any experimental/apoc units from FW unless you either play alot of appoc, or live by a incredibly friendly gaming center. The logic behind this statement being that why should you waste 40-50 dollars on something you will only get to use in 20% of your 40k games (Mind you I am one to talk since I have a FW warhound).

Thank you very much for your response. This is what I have been thinking. Spending that much money on a vehicle that might only be played very infrequently seems a total waste. Alas, my gaming is mostly with my son (7) on a homemade table in the basement. He is getting into Eldar and so I might actually get to paint something different.

OK... That is reason enough to dislike you. Just kidding... but I am jealous.

If you are worried about cost and have some extra time/creativity try you hand at scratch building. It's cheaper, far more satisfing, and you can literally do what you want. Templates can be found all over the web for just about any vehicle, I have most that you can find. I've been scratch building a Hellblade, it's not that hard and you can find most of the materials either around you house or at WalMart. There are a few specialty plastic peices you'll have to buy. I think all together I've spent about 20$ and 40 hours so far.
