just curious on other peoples take on this.

the other day we were playing a game and I shot at a flying hive tyrant with my forgefiend and had 2 unsaved wounds on it he passed his test for the grounding roll but failed for the pinning test.

now this is where we got stuck on what happens next. we couldn't find anything in the flying monstrous creatures or under the USR for pinning with regards to flyers, it only mentions vehicles. as a failed pinning test they have to go to ground. so does this mean that the FMC is auto grounded? because we couldn't find a rule either way we rolled the dice to decide and luck had it that it was grounded.

is that how others would've played it?

Well, the key thing you have overlooked here is that the Hive Tyrant is a Synapse Creature and is therefore Fearless.

He can't be pinned.

I feel like this is the case for everything in the air, but should there be an instance where you can be pinned while flying, you would immediately go to ground as there's nothing in the BRB that contradicts the Pinning rule in the rules for FMCs.

Flyer that even can be pinned--hmm. Harpy or Crone outside of Synapse range? I mean, Daemon FMCs or Synapse Creatures are all essentially fearless, so...

we've sorted it out they have the all same rules as a monstrous creature but also get flying rules and under the monstrous creatures special rules it says they can never go to ground voluntarily or otherwise. pointed out to us by our local games workshop store keeper. so even if it wasn't fearless it still couldn't be pinned.

I don't think to date GW has released a FMC that is not fearless. Harpies and Hive Crones are fearless.
