Right, here's my test model for a plain old silver fist marine...

Black is the main colour, of that i have no doubt. At the moment the model is Black undercoat, drybrushed with a 50/50 Fenris Grey/Chaos Black. Planning on extreme highlighting with Adeptus Battlegrey.

Trim and helmet is iyanden darksun, covered with golden yellow and highlit with sunburst yellow.

Hands are Tinbitz covered with chainmail, a black inkwash, and will be highlit Mithril Silver. I might take it down to just one hand.

Bolter is so far just some Red Gore, and this is where i have the most misgivings. A) a red bolter makes him look like a McMarine. Red Gore works the best of all the reds but I'm still not sure.

Options are... different helmet colour, different bolter colour.

Keep the helmet yellow, drop the red bolter. I would make it black body and metallic barrel/magazine.

but that makes the centre of the model a massive black hole. even with the chain done in bronze

Hm, good point. Maybe the red does work then. I'd do one of the kneepads in yellow though.

One of the kneepads and the casing of the gun can be done in yellow. Or with the gun, just paint it boltgun and give it a mostly undiluted wash of black ink. That is what I do anyway.

Seeing it now, the red isn't too bad. Probably better than the yellow, actually. I think I'd still go for a dark metal though, but the red is a good alternative.

Definately the dark metal from just looks, the red i think would look alot better if you did the top part of the bolter red and maybe the lower half boltgun with inkwash i think that would prolly look the best, but adding the boltgun metal definately gives it a better look

Agreed, the metal gun looks best. I also like the yellow on the right hand marine the best of the three.

yeah, he's the most done of the three. i did him at my local store yesterday, but cant do more than Iyanden Darksun back home because i dont have any golden yellow.

next question, does silver hand go ok with silver gun?

Too well :wink: it gets lost on the gun. The ribbed bit that he holds with the 'silver fist' could be done black to contrast.
In truth I quite like the red gun, I think it will work better when you come to doing vehicles and such as well as complementing purity seals and maybe eyes and gems if you go red on them.

The red's not too bad though, and you could always throw that in on a few models in order to break up the uniformity a bit. And as Vash says, if you use the same red elsewhere in the army, it'll look less out of place on the Marines.

uniformity is sadly paramount to me, so what we're going with is silver weapons, with black holdybit, silver fist (bright) and yellow other things.

hopefully should have at least one squad done tomorrow

Dam I wish I had gotten in earlier on this, my personal favourite was the yellow gun but no matter. I think you will have to be very careful of making sure the silver of the gun only stays in the parts which it is supposed to stay in other wise you will loose the silver hand. Thats why I choose the yellow but good luck with, looking forward to seeing more.
