I've had my 1k sons for about 2 years now but never got around to painting them, I have no real painting experiance, so its the main reason ive been putting it off. I used to have a friend paint my models but ive moved from canada to the US and he is too far away.

It's about time I learn to do it myself, not to mention I have a tournament in a few months and id like to play the thousand sons.

Im going to attempt something close to The Wraithlords new metalic sons. Any critique is welcome, if there are painting suggestions just remember I have little skill atm but if you explain it im willing to try most things.

This is the best one so far, primer black, base coat boltgun metal, 2 coats of 1:1 asurmen blue wash, and a coat of 3:1 asurmen wash. It's not near as bright as The Wraithlord and im not quite sure why yet.

A few touch ups like the left hand need work.

I need to do 3 squads of troops, 4 rhinos, 3 sorcs, 1 leader, 3 oblits, and 1 melta squad in like 2 months as best as im able, no time like the present.

EDIT: Also is it easier to paint the whole model the base and washes than paint over it with black for details, or should I stick with the way im doing it?

Don't forget that I also use mithril silver to add highlights once I get the washes done. The highlights will help brighten the model. Also, you will notice the blue stand out more once you get the gold happening as the two colours really light each other up. So far you seem to be doing just fine.

Well, I've been attempting the same paint job (3 people, 1 scheme - we can start something!). I have been using only 1:1 ratio of Water to Wash, and doing about 3. So mine are very blue (thats personal preference), but they are looking cool, I would definitely suggest highlighting them with Mithril silver, I also totally agree with Wraith, the gold really brightens the whole thing up.

testing highlighting, small highlighting in pure mithril silver worked great, when I started doing large sections on the legs, boots shoulder pads etc, they didnt blend well at all, so I did 2 slight washes of asurmen blue not sure it worked well enough. Planning on trying the gold shortly but I assume I should get highlights well enough before doing that.

I tried uploading from my computer and from image shack using the manage attachments but it fails, I assume too large? just lmk what I need to do to throw them in as you did wraith. Thanks

EDIT: the more I think about it the more I dont think you highlight the larger areas I was talking about, seems more like you just wash less on those areas and let the base coat shine through, thats why its blended so nicely.

yes but they would need to be resized as they seem to be quite large, thats the part im not sure about doin in the forum.

Two thing regarding pics: 1) Heresy Online will resize them for you and give people the option to view them as the full size pic and 2) use the DIRECT link from your image site with the image tags.

As far as the highlighting goes I mainly just do edge highlights with this type of paint scheme, not full size areas. I will readily admit that there is a bit of trial and error with this paint scheme but once you get the 'feel' for it you will knock it out with no trouble.

If you wanted a more vibrant blue; start with a mithril silver basecoat and do a heavy wash of the asurman blue. I'll post pics of man 1ksons once i can find my camera or my usb cable for my cell phone...
