Ok so I am totally new to IG, I don't even own a single model yet. So basically I wrote up this list as a starting point to guide me. As you will see it's quite simply a infantry gunline, I love the idea of an army trying to hold an area with trenches, artillery and so on.

Another thing I like about this list is that the whole thing is basically 3 battleforces, so it isn't as heavy on my wallet. This does prompt me to raise a question, am I correct in assuming that a guard army is one of the most expensive (in cash obviously) to field?

Ok so here is the list, C&C welcome. I will have some comments below the list.

Company Command
- Creed
- Cammo cloaks
- Master of ordinance
- Vox
=195

5 Ratlings (hate the models will convert my own snipers)

Marbo

Platoon 1
Platoon Command
- vox
- Heavy bolter
Infantry squad
- vox
- Autocannon

- Autocannon
=175

Platoon 2
Platoon Command
- vox
- Heavy Bolter
Infantry squad

- lascannon
Infantry squad
- vox
- lascannon
=195

Veteran Squad
- Vox
- missile launcher
- Forward sentries
=115

Veteran Squad
- Vox
- missile launcher
- Forward sentries
=115

3 Sentinels (as a squad)
- 3 plasma cannons
- smoke launchers
=240

Hellhound/Banewolf (haven't decided yet)
- Extra armour
- smoke launchers
=150

Manticore

Total 1460

Well firstly the sharper amongst you guys would notice that im 40pts short, and im stuck on what to do with it, was maybe thinking about throwing a commissar in there somewhere.

I loaded the platoons out so that I can engage anything at range; 2 heavy bolters, 2 lascannons and 2 autocannons.

I obviously intend to get the vets in cover and keep them there if possible. I was seriously considering throwing in harker but he didn't really fit with the feel or the army so I opted not to.

With Creed I intend to scout or outflank with either the hellhound or sentinels (although they are really expensive)

What does everyone think about vox? I thought it would be excellent in a heavy infantry army to keep the order coming clearly.

2 Things im worried about:
My command squad might be a nice juicy fire magnet thanks to the master of ordinance and Creed. The sentinels and vets might prove to be hefty on points

So that's it, thanks for any comments and help in advance.

40 points can get you a) one more 4-man ratling squad; b) Officer of the Fleet (best 30 points you can spend in a 1.5k+ game); c) the following suggestion: Take the Lascannons and Heavy Bolters out of your Platoons, join the two and two together into two 20man squads, add a Lascannon HWS and a Heavy Bolter (or even better, autocannon) HWS.
Missile Launcher and Forward Sentries? What for? Better get plain old Melta vets with no doctrines, x2. Take Chimeras if you can. You can get two if you don't use a Hellhound/Banewolf. Just remember to bring Hunter-Killer missiles, those things REALLY help.
Between 2x20 FRFSRF! infantry ranks, three Plasma Cannons and a Manticore you really need not fear any horde or MEQ army, and the twin Chimera Melta Vets are good against armoured vehicles that survive the FOMT! from three Lascannons.
Other than that, I think your build is really nice. Personally, I have switched from a Plasma Cannon Armoured Sentinel to a Multilaser Scout Sentinel, the massive boost in points is massive, and it's pretty much equally effective against MEQs, and acts as a cheap tie-up unit.
Regarding the Ratlings, yes, I also have elite specialist guardsmen as my snipers. I can't stand the little hairy-footed hobbits.

Ya, it might not be practical but it is scary

Im hesitant to add another sniper squad. I was considering the officer of the fleet, to help out with a drop pod list or something similar which would be this list's biggest problem. Your third suggestion sounds like a winner though, the only thing that bothers me is that with HWS my heavy weapons will be quite exposed and vulnerable without alot of wounds to soak up incoming fire. Regardless of that danger I reworked the troops like this:

Platoon 1
Platoon Command
- vox
Infantry squad
- vox
Infantry squad
- vox
HWS
- 3 lascannons
=250

Platoon 2
Platoon Command
- vox
Infantry squad
- vox
Infantry squad
- vox
HWS
- 3 autocannons
=220

It looks great just very expensive, but that shouldn't be a problem if I build the sentinels cheaper.

Missile Launcher and Forward Sentries? What for? Better get plain old Melta vets with no doctrines, x2. Take Chimeras if you can.
I agree the vets don't seem right, I will alter them a little. Your idea is nice, but it really wouldn't fit with the gunline idea, my last army was mech and im over it.

As for the sentinels Im sitting on the fence on how to kit them out, at least the models allow us to change the weapons and cockpit from game to game.

Thanks for the help guys, keep it coming.

You only need one vox in the two infantry squads if you're going to join them.
The Chimmy is there to give you mobility, the armor is just gravy. Mobile meltagun Vet FTW. Without that, and with the static nature of the HWS, a Devil Dog could be a good choice. It's kind of cheap, and can give you 12" double penetration (that came out so wrong). Creed makes it even more wrong, and turns it into 12" surprise DP buttsecks.

Oh yes of course.

Hahaha quite amusing. On a serious note I don't know if the extra AT is that necessary with the lascannons and manticore for heavier tanks and the autocannons and plasma cannons for lighter ones.

Plasma Cannons require Armoured Sentinels, so keep in mind that's 40 points difference from a Scout with Multilaser.

There's always use for another anti-tank weapon. Especially AT with a Blast. That never goes out of style :)
