Just what I said. I was playing a four way game yesterday: grey knights (me) vs. blood angels, eldar and nids. I found my self in a position where I could fire five psycannons into a cc between the eldar and BA, and my opponent says I can't do it. However, the rationale given in the book is that you don't want to hit your own troops, and neither of them were my troops, making it just like firing at a compacted group of soldiers.

A: Have any of you guys come across something like this?

and

B: What can be done about it?

Legally, you can't fire into the assault, regardless of who's in there. The rationale was just given for flavor. In reality, it's ust too much hassle to figure out who gets hit by what.

I mean, let's say I'm Chaos and my HQ is Kharn the Betrayer...he sure as hell doesn't care about friendly fire. What's to stop your havocs from opening up on a swirling melee between some necrons and your berzerkers?

What if I'm playing a hardcore inquisitor who feels that daemons should be stopped at all costs. Why wouldn't he hose down an assault between some lowly guard conscripots and a pack of daemons?

Orks...well, orks just don;t fucking care. They;d shoot into assaults if they could just for giggles.

But none of them are allowed to because it's against the rules. The rules are rules, and they effect everyone equally.

I would randomize the hits if your own forces are not involved. And as Gal implies, some types just wouldn't care.

I play with many poeple usually and we have a house rule that allows you to fire into an assault with only enemy models in it. To randomize it we add an extra roll (after the to hit roll) if there are only 2 different armies in there then a 4+ hits army A and a 3- hits army B. if there are 3 armies then 1/2 hits Army A 3/4 hits army B and 5/6 hits army B, and so on and so forth. Its mostly just to add the fun element of just hosing the poor unfortunate souls that are in an assault because they r all your enemies.

lol Galahad that cracked me up
but seriously why dont they modify the rules so that some armies CAN shoot into h2h combats. like galahad said, for some armies it just makes sense for them to fire into their own melees as well...perhaps they'll examine this in the rumored 5th edittion rules
