After a couple of months off I am once again trying to get into the game.

I have started assembling and painting a bunch of models that I have just purchased... I still am yet to decide on heavies, elites etc to finish the army off.

I'll post the list as it is at the moment and we can go from there:

HQ

Daemon Prince
+Wings
+Warptime
155pts

Troops

Khorne Berzerkers x 8
+Skull Champion
+Power weapon
+Rhino transport
233pts

Khorne Berzerkers x 8
+Skull Champion
+Power fist
+Personal Icon
+Rhino transport
248pts

Chaos Space Marines x 10
+Aspiring Champion
+Power Fist
+Icon of Khorne
+Meltagun x 2
+Rhino Transport
275pts

Fast Attack
Chaos Raptors x 10
+Icon of Khorne
+Meltagun x 2
250pts

Thats all that I actually have in my posession at the moment. A couple of things that I will definately be adding later (and therefore must be present in any propsed lists) are a second HQ; either a duplicate DP or perhaps the mighty Kharn, and a squad of 8 summoned lesser daemons.

I really don't know what to use to fill out the list. I change my mind twice a day, usually tossing up between defilers, raiders and dreads, although I am starting to warm to the idea of a pair of tri-las preds, and old school havocs aren't out of the question yet either. All I know is I definately do NOT want to see oblits in my army.

Input please....

Greetings khornate heretic,
For starters your zerker rhinos need EA!
Dreads . . . I love em alot of people dislike them but if you are gonna run them the two safest ways are 2xccw and HF or with a ML!
Kharn is immense and great fun so I suggest him! Stick him with the PW squad to give them more tank/dread destroying ability!
Defilers are fun but best run in pairs, just tool them with ccw as the only gun they want to be firing is the battle cannon, if that goes then get on your toes and fleet into combat!
LD's arent great but could be fun, if you took them I wouldn't bother with a 4th troop choice!
Raiders are fun but attract alot of fire and are a sizeable chunk of points! Hold them off too 2000 points!

I have been leaning towards Kharn myself, for one I do have a soft spot for him, and add to that the new plastic daemon princes probably aren't poseable enough to have two in an army without them looking like clones.

As far as EA for the rhinos, I only left that off as I usually like to fill up the majority of a list and then go back and whack on upgrades once I know what points are left over. EA is virtually a given even though I didn't include it.

Now, as for filling out the list.... I know the possible options, I feel I have a good understanding of the merits of each, but am having trouble grasping how they would actually fit in a work with the rest of the army as listed. Its easy to compare the units in a vacuum, but as far as "synergy" and all that crap goes I simply do not have enough gaming experience to make one choice stand out over the others.

I was sold on defilers, bot for one reason or another they are falling out of favour with me. I am probably leaning towards preds at the moment (one dakka and one tri las) but Im not 100% convinced. I am put off of dreads simply because I want to avoid any conflict over interpretations of the fire frenzy rule.

I think what I am looking for is a unit that will realiably open up transports for my zerkers. For that purpose lascannons would seem to be a much tastier choice than battlecannons. If only the rules were clearer a multi-melta dread would probably have been a good choice too.

I really thought someone would have something to add here?

Take a look at the list so far, try to imagine how the list might be played and what it is lacking and needs assistance with the most and post up your thoughts.

I sat here pondering and came up with the following:

Using Havoc's combined with a squad of Lesser Daemons will let you sit them on home objective and bring in a Scoring Unit later, while letting your Rhino squads plow forward. Havoc's are the only Heavy choice that can use an Icon, and with a set of missile launchers or something, will give you some ranged anti-tank.

Here is a list trying to use what you have and want to get. (I couldn't stick an additional HQ in, but if you shift some points around I'm sure you add one)

DP - 155
-Wings, Warptime

Zerks(8) - 258
-Champ w/fist, Rhino, EA
Zerks(8) - 258
-Champ w/fist, Rhino, EA
CSM(10) - 275
-Champ w/fist, IoK, 2X melta, Rhino
LD(8) - 104

Raptors(10) - 250
-IoK, 2X melta

Havocs(8) - 225
-IoK, 3X ML, Heavy Bolter
Havocs(8) - 225
-IoK, 3X ML, Heavy Bolter

1750

It's not optimized, but it's Khorney

Hey matt_a, I hate that as well, when you post, get a pretty good amount of views but seemingly no comments. So in this instance I'm glad to help out, and I know abit about Khorne Warbands as I proxy tested a few lists and they are very competitive IMO, I just hate all Khorne fluff lol.

Anyway for starters with regards to what you have so far I actually really like it, I'm glad to see you didn't go the three Berzerker troop choice way and instead added a very good Vannilla/Khorne squad with meltas, keep that no matter what people say as its great at multitasking depending on what your opponent brings.

The Raptors I'm not so fussed on in their current set-up, drop them down to 8 (fluffy and easier to hide in cover) and add a champion with a Powerfist to benifit from the IOK and help out against a tank or MC if your meltas miss.

IMO this list would be better served dropping the Daemon Prince all together and talking Kharn as the sole single HQ choice, (shameless self citing, read my tactica on his character in the link in my signature to see why he is amazing) and two HQ's is too much at 1750 IMO. Plus keep the Daemon Prince for 2000pt games and IMO it becomes very fluffy to use him and also would you even consider the MOK instead of Warptime to be extra fluff ?

You definately need some heavy support a dreadnought might be helpful towards this, they don't need twin CCW to be safe just don't place units in front of their 45 degree firing arcs from their weapons and it wont frenzy on your own units. A Defiler might be good and fluffy but I would give it a twin linked Lascannon to help deal with those bigger targets your list is vulnerable against. Finally using a Kharn berzerker squad in a Land Raider helps both with your need for Heavy support (two twin linked lascannons) and makes the Rhino's more survivable.

Anyway those are just some thoughts and I hope they help out. Good luck!

First off why would you take a TL lascannon, its a waste of twenty points, its unlikely to be used unless the battlecannon is destroyed. The problem with defilers is thay are just so big! But I've had some great success with the boys!
The best things for dreads if you don't go double ccw is either plasma cannon or missle launchers! (actually the plasma cannon is only viable if your running a Land Raider)
I haven't used raptors so I cant comment on their use, I have them but never rolled them out!
I don't like nilla marines, I try to run the buggers (playing black legion I feel I should have some) but they never seem to perform!

I like the way you think. Finally someone is on the same page as me :)

Originally the plan was to be strict and have every unit bear the MoK, but I have relented on that slightly by leaving the prince unmarked... maybe I could stretch it to include unmarked havocs... they would still be based on Khorne Berzerker models with big guns, ofcourse.

I hear what you are saying about the raptors. I did have them down as an 8 man squad with champ at once stage but then switched to the ten man no champ set up.... I can't quite remember my logic... maybe there was none.

The points cost comes out the same at the end, but I lose two wounds, and gain 4 STR9 I1 attacks (on the charge), in place of 12 STR5 I5 attacks.... that doesn't look as attractive now. I know the fist has other uses but I was essentially going to use the daemon prince in place of a champ in this squad, if he survives.

I was originally going to kit the prince out with a MoK, but I finally came to the conclusion that I am sacrificing a lot by choosing such a themed army already, I need to draw the line somewhere. I don't think anyone is going to hate me for not having a MoK on the prince, and even though this is meant to be a fun list, I don't want to lose every game.

I'm still iffy on dreads. I've been browing some local gaming club forums and the jury is still out on the interpretation of fire frenzy... still seems best to avoid. Although I must say that generally the community of HO seems to be in aggreance these days.

This ain't a typical Khorne army, and I don't think defilers are the answer here, nor raiders.

First off why would you take a TL lascannon, its a waste of twenty points, its unlikely to be used unless the battlecannon is destroyed. The problem with defilers is thay are just so big! But I've had some great success with the boys!

I can see a lot of good logic in taking the lascannon. Unfortunately that pushes the price of a defiler over the edge and makes it (for me) way too expensive.

DCCW dreads would not work in this list. Given how my list is built, I don't think a plasma cannon would be the weapon of choice either. I think it would be a toss up between an autocannon and lascannon... but then for the price that starts to make predators look attractive again.

Thanks for the replies guys, this is exactly what I was after. Not just two word answers, and definately some food for thought. I have by no means made up my mind, but I think I am starting to really lean towards either havocs or predators... I mean if you look at the list, it is fairly old school in a way in how it uses raptors and standard CSMs (albeit with MoK) and I've already broken most of the "rules" for unit selection, why not break a couple more? Maybe at the end of the day the list will end up being so "wrong" that it actually surprises people when it works.... or maybe it'll just fail :p

One last query while it is on my mind, what are peoples thoughts as far as HQs and quantity.... is 2 too much for 1750? The models are just sooo cool, I wants more!

Kharn is a great choice, i use him myself, but he really begs the use of a Land Raider. I also use double Princes from time to time and i find them to be a slightly more reliable option.
Don't let the plastic DP kit dissuade you, it comes with 2 body option, 3 head option, and 3 arm variants, a tail, as well as armour-y bits you can strap on. This gives you 3 distinct Prince set-ups (3 heads and arms) before you need to worry about clones.

The different weapon arms include a Power-Armoured Claw, 2 Sword Variants, and a big Axe.
