Damn that is a tough call! I tend to like martial arts fights the best myself so it is hard to pick just one. The matrix trilogy all had great fights in them, same with Lord of the Rings, and then you can go back in time and check out the fights in Bloodsport and what have you.
One that stands out in my mind that is NOT a martial arts battle is the raid on the town in The 13th Warrior. Some very cool action in that scene, hell one dude even bodyblocks a horse!:shok:
Fist of Legend...any of them. Transporter 2...Breaking in to the Big Bosses house. Matrix Reloaded...smoking the three agents early in the movie. Matrix Reloaded...in The Merovingian's house. Willow...Madmartigan's escape from the mountain. Willow...Madmartigan vs Kael. Troy...Achilles vs Hector Bourne Identity...man...all of them. Doom...Sarge vs Reaper. Brotherhood of the Wolf...the Mani intro fight. LotR:FotR...Amon Sul...the whole thing. Star Wars Episode One... Obi Wan Kenobi vs Darth Maul...until Obi Wan gets knocked down the hole (because Darth Maul shouldn't have gone out like that.) The Last Samurai...Ninjas Attack! Batman Begins...Bruce Wayne training with Ras al Ghul. V for Vendetta...V's last stand.
I think my top fight would have to be the orange/yellow sequence in Hero (the catfight.). For completely different reasons, I actually think the beach landing in Troy is quite well done, particularly on the director's cut. There's something almost rhythmic about how it's done. And admittedly, I wouldn't be a sci-fi geek if I didn't say that Ripley in the loading exo fighting the alien queen in Aliens wasn't badass...
Probably my favorite is the pistol whip fight at the end of Equilibrium. There's really no way to describe it other than :shok: The battle for Helms Deep and the battle of the Pellennor Fields are also among my favorites, for the sheer epic scale and desperation of the fights. Just about every fight scene in 300 is beautiful, partly due to the choreography and partly due to the camera and speed work.
Oh, and Hector vs Achilles is probably the most realistic duels I've seen, two brilliant warriors using everything available to defeat the other, armor doing what it's supposed to do (Stop damage, what a concept) and comparing the solid style of Hector to the flashy style of Achilles. Pure awesomeness.
And to any otaku out there, the very first fight between Goku and Vegeta has got to be one of the funnest fights to watch as well. The final fight between Spike and Vicious, while short, was also pretty damn awesome.
300 doesn't count because its so awesome and nothing else compares,
I think my favorite fight is probably the fight in the center of Midgar in Advent Children, Cloud and friends + the Turks vs the 3 brothers and all teh monsters ending with the team effort to take down Bahamut.
Another of my favorite fights has to be Lilu vs the mercenaries on the cruise ship in fifth element. I love teh way that the Diva compliments the action with her upbeat opera.
I think anyone who places scenes from the Matrix high on their list has never seen Equilibrium.
Every fight in that movie is goddamned awesome.
Where he goes hammer-style on that ring of badguys (using the handy built-in clubbing spikes), the scene where they try to steal his puppy and ht totally fucking shoots those guys with their own shotguns *while they;re still holding them*, then one-hand pumps both shotguns at once...where he flatlines the polygraph and he fights his way into the office (compare that to the lobby scene in the matrix and weep), the pistolwhip fight at the end, the sword fight right before that where he kills a dude with a scabbard and then totally slices a man;s face right the fuck off.
That movie was godly. Hell, even the opening gunfight in the dark was awesome. And it was in the fucking dark.
Not to say the Matrix wasn't a good film, but Equilibrium is one of the most underrated movies in recent memory. It came out at just the wrong time though, too close to the Matrix and got labelled as a knockoff. Except Christian Bale was cold and wooden because his character is supposed to be an emotionless killing machine...while Reeves is simply made of solid oak and painted with a lifelike fleshtone laquer.
Mal vs the Agent was pretty good though. Serenity was a great film.
300 was one long fight scene. Hard to pick a favorite part.
