An old friend of mine that has been abroad for a number of years has returned to Blighty and has just settled into the idea of playing again.

He is/was an Epic played of well 'Epic' proportions during the 'second' edition rules. (We have only totaled up the pointage of his eldar at 38,000pts in those rules and thats his second army. )

We have been chatting about playing for a while now and have decided to play the old rules scince the edition after was a real balls up ( We refer o it as 'Monkey edition' and Armageddon is not much better in our opinion.

This just works better for us in many ways. ( Im gonna dooz da Orks and iz Mekin up loadsa sctratch built gubbinz, he plays 1st Imperial, 2nd Eldar.)

What I was wondering is does any one play Epic and if so which set of rules are you playing and why?

I downloaded the new Epic rules the other day, and I have to say that they're an utter mess. When they switched from Space Marine/Titan Legions to Epic 40K, they crowed about how SM was really complicated, and E40K was a streamlined, more elegant system; there's some truth to that, but you also got weird situations with models shooting things they couldn't see, because the majority of the unit could see the target, and it was all majority-based rules back then.

As far as I can tell, the current rules take the weird abstractness of E40K and over-complicate it to a silly degree (there are about sixteen different actions a unit can take now, as opposed to the four of the apparently "complicated" SM). So if I were playing again today, I would just go back to the SM/TL rules, to be honest; I always thought they were a simple and elegant rules system anyway, and they're a great deal better than the current mess.

I only have about 6000 points of Eldar (and a proxied Warlord Titan as my Phantom ), but I'll hit you up for a game someday if you're willing.

(and 6000-a-side games used to take me and my mates all day; I can't imagine how long a 38000 pointer would take!)

I will let you know if I ever have enough Orks to face him.
He wants to do 8000pts training games for me so it looks like Im gonna have to learn fast.

Definatly up for games when I know what Im up to with the epic rules and have sorted my games room/table.

Where do you normally play 40k?

Epic Armageddon is far superior to the line up and shoot of previous editions. Manouvreabilty and the organisayion of close firefights is the key to victory.

Its also an incredibly simple system! What on earth are you finding difficult about it?

Thats the problem nothings difficult, its all so basic.

Lets just say that the older version of Epic ( Space marine and Titan Legions.) Had more flavor and individual and that we Me and my mate Iain ( I cannot speak for kelvingreen) are much happier playing the rules that have knights, Spleenrippers etc than the current system With Gunwagons that all have the same stats and the rather dull Firepower system.

Its personal opinion really but it does leave us free to learn the rules once, buy the rules once and then focus on the models and games.( To put that into context I have just got myself all the books, cards and models I need for about £50 and can now play the game at about 8000pts.)

I spend enough money trying to keep up to date with 40k so they can go swing for the rest.
I totaled up what I had spent on Just the rules for 40k a while back and was truley horrified. All the books and box sets for the RT days and Second Edition most in Third and a fair few through the Fourth edition lets face it I could of had every army or mini I wanted by now for that cash.

But most likely Im an old fart

I've got all the Orks from the basic 2nd Ed set, or at least I think I do. If I can find them, and they're of any use to you, I may be able to bulk up your army a bit. It's just boyz and battlewagons, but it's something.

Nowhere at the moment, as I don't have a playable army! But I'll begoing to the Brighton Warlords gaming nights when I've got my stuff sorted. I don't know if Warlords have any Epic gaming tables/scenery though.

I'd agree with that. I played a few games of Epic 40K when it first came out, and it was streamlined, but a bit too streamlined for my liking. From what I've read of Armageddon, it's considerably more complex than Epic 40K.

To be honest, it's a dead system, isn't it? And if I'm going to play a dead system, I'd rather play one I know well (SM/TL) than learn a new one that's equally dead.

Let me know how you get on with the NetEpic rules. I didn't have the internet back when I played SM/TL, so I don't know how well they work!

Edit: I've just had a quick butcher's at the rules, and they seem to be pretty solid.
