Well, while i was touching my Dread up (painting :D) I was thinking, could i protect it. Here is my idea:

-------------Dread
----Termi1---------------Termi5
------Termi2----------Termi4
---------Termi3-TermiChaplain

---------Devastator squad

My dread is equipped with Lascannon and Missile launcher
Would this work?

Tell me your veiws

This will be great protection from troops and DS, but being a vehicle it can still be shot at.
I agree with you on that point. But one of my Tactical squads has a meltagun, so lets say i get another three Tactical sqauads, arm 1 from each with a meltagun and try and take out a vehicle? I mean, 30 Marines 3 vehicles, (not in the same turn) but it might be a plan...

EA and smoke are a must for all imperial vehicles, I never leave home without it. Not even my IG sentinels can escape it
I usually pass on Extra Armour. 15 points on a 35 point Rhino is just exorbitant. For the cost, you're better off just making the Dread Venerable.

Non-DA/BA Dreads it's a good option - till summer anyway.

I would say that Extra armor is at its full use on a rhino. on a pred, if its hit, it already cant shoot and is thus not worth its points. however, if your rhino cant move, it cant fulfill its only perogative, which is to move.

Extra armor is vital on a transport. after all, if it can't transport, its useless.

I dunno, because for the amount i've already spent with the Lasacannon and Missile launcher i could use a cheaper alternative :p

One important thing to note is that regular codex SM extra armor only costs 5 it's just blood angels and dark angels that got hosed.

Something else to consider: Venerable. If you have extra armor, venerable is a vewy worthy investment

In what way were DA and BA (and chaos) hosed? The cost of a Rhino with extra armour in their codecii (sp?) is the same as a bog standard rhino with nothing from any other codex... Seems like a good deal to me...

Yeah they made it so that you might now take a rhino without EA, in which case it's cheaper. They gave you smoke launchers for nothing. All in, a BA/DA rhino with EA and smoke is 8 points cheaper than a codex one. Not hosed then.

Back on topic I'm a bit surprised by how much effort you are putting into protecting your dread. Dreads aren't especially vulnerable to assault in my experience, but are more likely to get shot.

To protect a dread like this you should deploy it behind some height 3 area terrain, ruins or woods, whavever, and leave it there until a tank shows up for it to shoot at. Then move it so that it can shoot its target while revealing itself to the minimum amount of enemy fire.

Sorry but this isn't going to protect it worth shit. Very few folks want to assault a Dread in cc and will simply direct a lascannon or such at it right off the bat as they know it will fold like a tin can at the slightest provocation. Neither my Thousand Sons or my Tau (especially my Tau) have EVER had a dread reach me in cc and very rarely leave one alive in the first turn barring phenominally bad rolls.

Of course, no one will ever convince me that Dreads are worth putting on the table either due to the above stated reasons. One of the biggest waste of points there is next to the Defiler.

defilers noat bad....... slower and crapper than a dread, but still worth taking if u have a space to fill, and only 150 pts for it to attract alot of deadly enemy fire :D

last time i used mine though, it had taken 15 dark lances to destroy it..... keep glancing and getting crew shaken or stunned :D funny until it exploded and took seven of my Slannesh and 5 Witches
