Ever had die rolls that threw the laws of nature out the window? That day where every roll is a hit, or you never can wound?
I had a special time today with a trio of Dark Reapers.
In the first 3 turns of the game, they were possessed..
I fired their 6 shots at a marine tactical squad, rolling all at once.
Turn 1 - 1, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1
Turn 2 - 1, 1, 1, 4, 1, 1
Turn 3 - 1, 2, 1, 2, 2, 2

That's right.... 1 hit out of 18 shots, the first two rounds with 5 1's.

Right here, lord of the dice!:fuck:

That's where 'mathhammer' loses its use.

Actually that is when math hammer has its uses, by comparing what you rolled against the average you realize that it was dice fluke and that the unit doesn't really suck. If you didn't know the average you should be hitting in you would have never used that unit ever again.

People forget that averages are based on a large number of "tries" or attempts. The less attempts that are used the more inaccurate the numbers will be compared to the proper average. For all those times you rolled five 1's there are probably times you rolled five 6's add those together and hey, you are actually about average...math hammer does work.

But, on the other hand, we aren't all math people and emotion plays into our thinking. I think I have won a first turn 3 times out of all the 40k games I have played and I can't for some odd reason roll higher than a 3 on glance or pen rolls. So I went out and bought new dice. The pen and glance rolls have been better, but still losing those first turn rolls...oh well..

Sounds like you had a fun game!

My Avatar of Khaine tended to roll five 1's whenever a crucial game-winning/losing roll was taken. I no longer have that model.

Hmmm... <----- I have family that looks like him...

I find thats one reason i like mass numbers...consistancy....even i roll poorly 60 shots will do something.

For dice..my battle cannon never hits except for the first shot that always hits...
I always get so excited nothing like first turn hits...but after that nothing and i often switch to the bolters.

Also my conscripts are CC gods. They seem very lucky and have won more than there fair share of combat especially vs space marines.

My old Orc speedfreaks were the jammiest army ive ever played, even though the rules were in their favour so too were the dice gods, playing a tyranid army once my boss and 9 nobs plus truck destroyed 3 tyrant guards by shooting and the hive tyrant in combat all any of them had was slugga and choppa plus the big shoota on the truck, that whole turn was equally lucky and there was a vast pile of nid corpses in the next turn that seemed to distract my boys as they barely killed a thing.

For me the best case of that was lucky for me anyway. My friends space marines had been blasting my orks to pieces and I wasn't really doing much damage in return except for my big gun crew. His deep strike terminators were sent in to deal with them. I had a small 8 man grot speed bump there to tie up any enemy units that made it back there unit the boyz could get there and give them a proper krumping. So I had the grots attack the 6 terminators. I was surprised when all my grots wounded the terminators and hoped that maybe I would kill 1 or 2. Since he only needed a 2+ I figured most would survive and wipe out the grots next turn. He rolled all 1's for his saves. Both of us stood there looking at the dice for atleast 10 seconds because we could not believe it. It turned out to be the turning point of the battle as I then ended up killing off most of his army and winning. BOth of us still talk about it how 8 grots beat 6 terminators.

Yup... my son does that with his broods, but only against my vehicles. I'm not sure that one has ever survived a 'Stealer assault. Fortunately, it's not so often that the brood survives the resultant explosion either.

It also reminds me of my good friend's old Dark Eldar Lord. I shot him with a plasma pistol at least every other game, and every single time he failed his Shadowfield save and suffered Instant Death from the strength 7. I just stopped taking plasma pistols and used bolt pistols instead, to make him feel secure enough to field a lord, lol.
Or another friend who used Nightbringer religiously. I only played him twice, but each time in my first turn I downed nightbringer with autocannons. And it was rather immediate, failing every initial save.

Oh, and in my Dark Reaper atrocity game, the enemy using Black Templars made like 9 of 12 of those damn Vow 6+ saves.

How about a Brass Scorpion of Tzeentch (that's right, Tzeentch) that faces off against a Hellhammer, a Baneblade and dozens of Imperial Tank killers, and lives to kill the Hellhammer and around 5 or 6t of the Leman Russes and Basilisks?

Or Kharn charging and killing 5 of his retinue before the Bezerkers even began to attack. Or Abaddon rolling a one 3 times in a row, the third after he'd been charged by a unit of Death Company and Chaplain (a friend's game in store).

Hey guys i'm a newbie here but i have a story of survival against all odds that has been known to shock and delight many a wargamer for the last year.

I was at my first tournament, the GW run Conflict in Sydney australia, I'd just been completely destroyed by an Ork army (his dead pile consisted of 3 boys and 2 gretchin, mine everything except the 2 retreating bikers at turn 6) and was pretty afraid of Orks, suddenly im tossed into round 2 of 3 against another Ork army, several turns of running later and my 185 point daemon prince and his retinue of 4 chosen are under an ordnance template from a looted demolisher, 2's to kill everything all instant death, no armous saves... my opponent picks up his dice and rolls...

5 1's!!! that squad alone earned me 50% of my victory points in kills after they charged and ripped apart his tank, went on to win that game with crafty use of my bikes turbo boosting between objectives until my obliterator turned up and took over 1 and the squad infront reached another, so my bikes contested my opponents only objective.

Ah how I do love retelling that story, my one victory by use of tactics, then it became a Khorne army...
