Ok so i was looking at my Tau codex today and i think i've balls'd up!

I upgraded my Devilfish to have the SMS. When i built it i assumed that it replaced the weapons systems. However on closer inspection (i actually read them) of the rules it appears to only replace the drones and not the burst cannon.

So im i correct in thinking that i get both the drones and the cannon?

You are correct. SMS replaces the drones. I kit my 'fish out with SMS, burst, multitracker, decoys, disruption, target lock. Target lock is incredibly important to take if you are going with SMS as it lets you fire the missles at a separate target than the cannon and often you will do exactly that to hit a unit that is behind cover. Disruption is just filler points for me but turning any hit into glancing only provided the firing unit is over 24" away is a good thing for first turn with little cover to hide behind.

yeah the SMS adds an etra 4 shots making a grand total of 7 str 5 shots , much better thana any drone, i think this config is called a Warfish

yeah, SMS blows stuff outta cover at the cost that any terrain it passes over counts as cover for the unit being shot at, this usually doesnt matter as the Warfish gets up close and personal most of the time. VERY lethal in cityfight or Jungle fight but the 7 BS4 shots can chew through even marine squads

Disruption pods are a waste of points, seriously.

From a ways away they make you count as obscured which means there's a *chance* they'll glance instead of penetrate.

Meanwhile, simply moving around the board like you should be doing makes it so that all shots, no matter how close glance always.

Your skimmers should never e stationary. Even doing FoF, you should zoom the skimmer in, disembark, blow the everloving crap out of your target at close range, then next turn, load up and reposition.

Disruption pod is useful mainly in the first turn on a board that has very little cover. Other than that however... Gal is right on the money.

Good point, if you don't get first go. But generally I like to keep my skimmers behind cover during setup.

I follow a similar tactic. Basically that will soak up fire stays and will not withstand it is behind cover, only the toughest of my units are out of cover as they can take the incoming shit from god only knows what weapons im facing

*excuse the language, im in a rather foul mood as i just found out my GF is cheating on me*

haha yea. nah its all gud, we stayin frends neway. im bak in a beta mood now, played a 1000 point battle, only just lost because he had last turn and took the objective. still he shouted me a meal after. plus i got a few more models to paint like ancients and so on. incredibly awsome battle though. It was Tau vs Tau.

and i used my tactic i mentioned earlier on, had my broadsides with 6 SD's each simply wasting anything that came into line of sight including a 'hull down' hammer head which was promptly immobilised, 2 armament destroyed and sat there looking vaguely cool and completely useless

i find that my Hammerhead scare the living daylights out of anyone i vs

people dont usually take anti-tank weapons more effective than 2 missile launchers at 1000pts for some reason so the Disruption pod is quite handy, i find i can usually spare the 5 pts for it because i hate my HH blowing up on the first turn.

would disruption pods not be useful for when you get hit and stunned, therefore next turn are leaving yourself open?

Disruption pod would be useful if you ended up stunned, but at that point you're paying points for the *chance* to count penetration as glances, after a certain range, if you happen to be stunned.

There's got to be a better use for the points.

As for modeling the burst cannon and SMS...I'm not sure how you wouldn't be able to do it.

Burst cannon goes in the nose, the SMS units just slot into the drone holders.

Or does the SMS only come on the Hammerhead sprue?

In that case, you'll need four battlesuit missile pods, a couple drone dishes and some buts of sprue or plasticard.

In that case, you snap the burst cannon into the mounting bracket for the missile rack

Same sprue for the SMS should also have the burst cannons. They go on the same mount but (fortunately) it's a bit easier to switch out than, say sponsons on a predator.

What I did was shave the side pegs on the missiles and BC at an angle (sorta like < > but not so sharp) that way they snap in and out.

however, I found that I never used burst cannons on my Hammerheads. Always went for SMS, so I cut the burst cannons up to act as hydraulic struts on my broadsides (makes for a lovely ASS)

Yeah same here. I have never put burst cannons on the HH, sms is the way to go.
