EDIT: Updated to be more in keeping with Current Fluff

Heres the background I've come up with for Kilm Vanshal. Its not great but the ideas are there.

Kilm Vanshal

-Written by Jacobite and Viscount Vash -

A former member of the Night Lords Chapter Kilm Vanshal now operates as the guiding force for the Dark Talons despite the fact that he wasn’t at either of the Betrayals.

Before the Heresy Vanshal served under Zso Sahaal. As a Lieutenant Vanshal was a first rate line officer who specialised in diversionary attacks and leading Planetary Assaults. After the Heresy Vanshal supported Zso when he took possession of the Corona Nox and was given command of a Battle Company for his loyalty.

After Zso went missing following a Eldar ambush, Vanshal was viewed with distrust by the other Company Commanders both due to his connection to Zso Sahaal and his new status within their ranks. Many thought Vanshal would try and succeed Zso as the Talon Master but when Kreig Acerbus became leader Vanshal offered no resistance. However, despite this acceptance of the new order, the rest still viewed him as a outsider.

As time passed the structure of the Legion began to splinter into smaller raiding parties. The majority of the marines within Vanshal’s company stayed loyal to their Commander although there were a few murmurs of rebellion against him.

At some point during M36 things turned nasty for Vanshal. While part of a larger raiding force his company was sent on a diversionary attack on a Imperial Fortress.

Vanshal’s small company was quickly pinned down by pinpoint artillery fire and mine fields. To make matters worse it was this point that the dissenters within the force attempted to take over.

Realising that he had been abandoned and betrayed Vanshal staged a fighting retreat. A full 3/4 ‘s of his force was destroyed throughout the withdrawal, gunned down by Imperial and Chaos bullets.

Despite all odds Vanshal and the remainder of his force made it back to their ship, at the time called The Fear Scythe and immediately made a blind warp jump. Becalmed in the warp they soon feel prey to the daemons that dwell within it.

As the days turned into weeks Vanshal became more and more frustrated with the situation. Finally Vanshal's feelings boiled over into a tempestious rage, he screamed out his frustration and hatred to the warp. Hearing his cry the Chaos Gods, impressed by his hatred, malace and the burning blackness within his heart, intervened and guided the ship to a planet deep with the Maelstrom where Vanshal could rebuild his forces and plan his revenge.

On that world Vanshal and his brothers did indeed grow back to full strenght and Vanshal plotted his plans for revenge - how is unknown. When the Dark Talons were betrayed by the Val Gaur it was Vanshal who made contact with them and offered them aid in their quest. It is not known what Vanshal will get out of it or whether his is really even human anymore or instead the shell for some deamon.

Since then Vanshal has guided the Chapter from victory to victory. He is treated with huge respect by the marines within the Dark Talons no matter what position they hold. He is seen as being a true warrior of death and therefore not one to be messed with.

For the few Night Lords who survived their time in the warp old tricks died hard. They went on to form the beginnings of the Dark Talons Raptor Squads and like Vanshal they are some of the most pious of all the Marines within the Dark Talons. While they retain their Night Lords Winged Skull the majority of their armour is painted in Dark Talon colors to show their devotion to their leader and their contempt of their past.

----------------------------------------

My mental image of him is in Power Amour, no jump pack, no wings, possibly robes with a power sword, Night Lords shoulder pad and bolter or combi bolter. Bare headed, may be carrying a winged helmet. (Yes I know the majority of you hate the NL's helmets but I think it would probably fit the image.)

I like it Jacs,
If i could be so bold as to make a small suggestion, the part:

"As the days turned into weeks Vanshal became more and more frustrated with the situation. Finally Vanshal lost it, he screamed out his frustration to the warp."

May read better along the lines of:

"As the days turned into weeks Vanshal became more and more frustrated with the situation. Finally Vanshal's feelings boiled over into a tempestious rage, he screamed out his frustration and hatred to the warp."

Definitely like this stuff and it give quite a few great conversion ideas for former-NL aspiring champions.

Yea thats the idea. I'd really love to have a crack at doing Vanshal mini but lack of free time at the mo is hurting me bad.

A Raptor squad done up as the NL Vets could so cool. Not all aspiring Champions have to be NL though, in fact if we get a range of Orginal Nine Aspiring Champions leading squads it could look really nice.

Anyway time to start work on the other two characters. Oh to find time.

Yea thats a good point, this was written before the current fluff came into being.

Personally I like the idea of having him as one of the Orginal Nine and in a leadership role within the chapter. (If i didn't I wouldn't have wrote it that way lol). I feel that it gives our story some grounding within the 40K universe and also opens up some very very interesting conversion possibilities as it means we can include the odd member of one of the other 8 Tratior Legions.

If anybody has any thoughts on the opposite side of the argument then please do tell. Lets get this thing really firing along!

I just can't see the Talons trusting someone not of the Chapter to lead them after all the betrayals they've suffered. I mean, from that fluff it feels like he's essentially usurped the position of Chapter Master, and I think it would work better if he was more of an advisor, similar to a Chaplain or a Company Master in a normal SM force. That way, he has clout within the warband, but isn't calling all the shots.

Thats a point, like I said, its been a while since I read the new fluff. In the orginal stuff the chapter was ruled by a 3 point tribunal or the Libriran, A Captain and Kilm (who took on a chaplin kinda role).

As for the whole trust issue. I think that they would see a kindred spirit due to the fact that he has been betrayed as well.

Alright as soon as I have the time (tomorrow or tuesday) I'll run through the entire fluff thing again, add Kilm's segment and check for any other inconsistencies that may still be in there. Then if 'everybody' is happy with it I can turn it into a nice pdf-file

Well I've been messing around quite a bit with pdf and crap due to another project on another site. I'll put together a nice template somewhere this week as well, we might as well turn this into a mini 10-something page codex/index astartes article

More on this asap!

My apologies for the delay!

Thanks, I do think that I'm going to have to take a more hands on approach to this projects as soon as I struggle to my other Astronomican project (which is turning in to a 3-4 hour a day thing:wink:).

I have to say the any unit is afraid is a bit to powerful. For instance no matter how powerful he is if gazgul saw him he wouldnt be afraid. I think that rule should exclude independent characters
