As a side line to my Emperors Children army I've come up with an idea for a new chapter called the Dark Brethren. The fluff I've come up with so far is that there allengences are unknown. They have been known to fight along side chaos but have been known to appear on the battlefield on the side of the imperial. There is also reports of them acting as bodyguards for anybodie willing to pay. There exact origans are unknown but are thought to be an offshot of one of the original Legions. The marines themselfs wear no chapter mark or insignia save the odd skull on there shoulder pads.

On a colour side of life I was thinking of having black armour and purple ropes or the other way round. I am thinking of using either black templers or dark angel figs combined with csm's.

The only rules I've come up with was letting all troops been able to deep strike but if they failed morale checks, the unit dos not move, it just simply disappears, ie are removed off table. Also the unit can deploy in 5 man combat squads. Also the only wpns they can take are man-portable I.E no vechs. Might let them use bikes.
Any feedback would be very heplfull as this is still in the planning stage. Hopefully updates will be forthcoming.

Looks good, I would personally go for a DA themed models, with CSM arm pads, are they gonna be worshipping a mark? Or just undivided? Maybe you could make a few more rules for them, but it looks good so far!

What I was planning was to have them using the csm codex but give them no mark. The rules side for them are in the pipe line but I will put them up once I've sorted them out.

Interesting idea, but having no vechs is a big disadvantage, it would make the army a fairly slow moving one. At least let them have someform of transport otherwise a shooty army like tau will just whittle them down as they approach then finish them with kroot.
As for deepstriking there is the risk of losing your guys.

Good point that Olek. Have decided on a colour scheme for them now. There going to be black armour, with gold trim and dark red robes. Will put up a photo when I've finished painting one.

X's changed to K's.

I like the color scheme, seems a bit black-legion-y but the cloaks will set them apart. Are they going to have any insignia? Or any common insignia, more likely?

Finished painting one now and I'm most pleased with how it came out. I don't think I'm going to give them a chapter insignia but they are all going to have a skull on the left hand shoulder pad. Legion of the Damned ones will be perfect.

I also want them to have a mixture of old chaos weapons mixed in with newer looking stuff so it will give me a chance to use some of the box sets I normally can't use with my slaanesh army like an imperial dread for example.

On the fluff side I'm toying with the idea of shortening the name to just "The Brethren" as there seems to a lot of Dark somethings about. The reason that they will fight for both sides is that they are following there own aims and agendas and if this envoles aidding the imperial or chaos forces, so be it.

Theres a few more ideas in the pipeline and I will put them up once I've fleshed them out a bit.

The red cloaks on black looks good but the gold trim is very black legion

I do have to agree on that point. I got a bit stuck on the trim colour and only ended up using gold as it did add some contrast to the black and red. Any ideas on an alt to the gold.

A silver trim might work, or bone to tie in with the skeleton insignia

Ok, update time. Come up with this expanded fluff and a few rules to use with them. I was going to make the basic marine cost 25pts and use the basic csm stats for them. Will be playing a few test games with them to see how they work and will be coming out with a much fuller army list as well. Comments and suggestions are more than welcome.

The Brethren

Origins and Appearance

Details of the origins of the Brethren are vague and sketchy at best as most of the information gained is from rumour and hearsay. The first recorded sighting of them was at the end of the Horus heresy as the original traitor legions were making there way towards the Eye of Terror. They were seen to be attacking both traitor and on occasion, loyalist when it seems that they got in the way of there objective.

Despite the best efforts of the Astartes, none of the Brethren have been captured and no bodies recovered for examination to ascertain the origin of the gene seed.
(EDIT) The most popular theory is that they are members of the Alpha Legion who were not with the rest of the chapter when they meet the Cable on Eolith and refused to break there oaths of loyalty to the Emperor. The evidence availiable dos seem to back this up such as there ability to operate on planets undetected for hundreds of years and there use of the local population during there operations even going as far as having some Imperial Guard units under there influence.

The Brethren dress in midnight black power armour with dark red robes equipped with a mixture of heresy armour and weapons mixed with more up to date gear.
They show no chapter markings or insignia on there armour.

Tactics and organisation.

The Brethren always seem to arrive deep striking close to there target and specialise in fast surgical strikes taking out there targets before they know they are there and then disappearing before they can react.

(EDIT)They have also been observed to be primary an infantry based force with the bulk of them working in 5 man teams with either a heavy or a specialised weapon in each.
The exception to this is there assault squads who operate in 10 man units.

They also seem to be tougher than the average Astartes, been able to take punishment that would normally fell a normal marine.
They also seem to operate in 5 man combat teams with either a heavy or a special weapon.

Special Rules

Feel no pain.
Deep strike

All units start the game in reserve. Any number of units can arrive on turn 2, without the need to roll, the remainder are subject to the normal deep strike rules.

Furious charge

Edit; Had an additional idea.
Only give the furious charge to dedicated assult squads ie jump troops and the lord/commander.
Repainted the gold trim bone.

Redone fluff

Hi all, I've redone the fluff for The Brethren, any comments or ideas are more than welcome

The most popular theory of there origins is that they where members of the Alpha Legion who were not with the rest of the chapter when they meet the Cable on Eolith and refused to break there oaths of loyalty to the Emperor.

After the Heresy had ended, it is rumoured, the High Lords of Terra had decided that there particular skills could still be used by the Imperium and formed the loyalists into a new, small chapter called “The Brethren”. There main task been intelligence gathering on various
xenos and heretic operations.

Despite the fact that they are regarded as loyalist, not all the Astartes trust them fully, namely the Dark Angels, who suspect that they have helped members of the fallen evade capture, and the Ultramarines.

The reality of there origins is somewhat different. After the events on Eolith, the Alpha Legion Primarch, Alpharius dispatched a detachment of the 16th Company under the command of Lord Commander Bekenel to the area now know as Segmentum Tempestus with orders to set up a centre of operations and gather intel under the guise of being still loyal to the Emperor.

They have been very successful in this with there influence stretching all over the Segmentum all the while feeding the imperial with false information and half truths while still passing on vital information and mounting there own operations for there real commanders, the Alpha Legion.
