Um...not to try and throw too bigger a spanner in the works but they are competitive. This years GT heats showed Dark angels to manage higher placings than regular space marine chapters in heats one and three.

That said they aren't as easy to use as regular marines. There's a lot less customisation available and the different pricings and options can be difficult to deal with.

They still aren't as good on paper as other chapters, such as the Blood angels or Traited chapters. Yet they do seem to be able to perform well on the table with certain combinations of units. (Ravenwing are the success story so far.)

Best reason to use Dark angels is the background, it's awesome. (Got me hook line and sinker.)

No. They haven't been made any worse. They just made it more kid friendly (read the dumbing down 40k topic) and took out the armoury. It makes it alot more simple but less customisation. It kinda sucks.

They're still at their full capacity. I've been playing for a bit over a year with them and they have really been good to me. Sure, My win to lose ratio doesn't look good, but I'm still a bit of a noob to 40k games.

Just make sure to enjoy them.

They're not as powerful as the Las/Plas and Asscan spam Marine tournament armies.

They're great for friendly play. Their rules are much more fun and more characterful, they have the best fluff and an awesome looking colour scheme.

You can also look down your nose at the cheesy power gaming gits using custom traits and 6-man squads, secure in the knowledge that you play a thinking man's army and that you win because of your skill and not because of a list you found on the internet. [/ranting]

I've been playing DA since Codex Angels of Death. They're an enormously fun and characterful army and their fluff helps rationalize why they seem to end up fighting Ultramarines and Imperial Guard so much.

I would disagree with this strongly.
At heat 3 of the UK GT Dark Angels were the highest placed marine army, with Black Templars second - two armies which have allegedly been nerfed in their current codexes.
The fact of the matter is that current top tier lists are all aqbout mobile firepower, and a combined raven/ironwing Dark Angels army does that really well.

I've played a whole lot of games with the new C:DA, and with four completely different armies (one I just posted in the army list forum).

They have a whole lot to offer, but I've found a few strengths that are undeniably powerful.

1) Hybrid Ravenwing-Deathwing army
With the ability to make a 12" scout move, then deep strike terminators on the first turn, then move forward and charge into combat with bikes OR turbo-boost safely into a more strategic position, this army has a lot of versatility, and a whole lot of potential for a first turn close combat charge. Very overpowered against an average opponent.

2) All Ravenwing army
It's amazing how many landspeeders you can cram into an army like this, especially if you utilize the Ravenwing Attack Squadron to get extra Tornadoes. The long range firepower available to an army like this is pretty good with all the assault cannons, multi-meltas and plasma guns it can field (and fire on the move). It can also assault on the first turn.

3) Devastator-based Army
Three Devastator squads become six, since you can split them up, and since the Plasma Cannon is now cheaper than it was in C:SM, it's definitely worth taking lots of them (and lascannons as well). Take four heavy weapons per Dev.Squad and split the squads. This gives you the ability to maximize the effectiveness of the weapons since you only have to fire off two at a time before picking what the next two will target. The remainder of the force can be Tactical Squads with Las-Plasma and powerfists for counter-charging capability.

There are lots of other variations of the Dark Angels too... too many to type out right now :)

thanks that helps alot... the fluff is what was driving me towards them, asmodia made a good point there though, i hate battles that are fighting the list not the player, i will take this into consideration on pay day on the 21st of this month and then unleash the cash upon games workshop middlesbrough ahha :)

yeah i play dark angels too they can be really powerful if you use them right as my dark angels remain undefeted with all my friends including fighting off blood angels and ultramarines as well as tyranids and orks(close shave though with the orks if i had not taken out that dred i would have lost ruining my winning streak)

Brother Wulox those some very helpful comments...not. Anyway the DA are pretty cool and have different paint schemes, so a bone white for the termi or a jet black for the ravenwing. They also have a great diversity in tactics and look good when put on the table. If you don't feel like painting the green go with a dark angel second founding chapter. Also the hoods just look amazing.

I think they're under-appreciated more than anything else.
DA is my second army (after Eldar) and I love the bikes.

Has anyone put together an effective Deathwing-based army?
I was tempted to just say Deathwing suck, but I realise how bad that would seem. Anyway Deathwing-based would be difficult to do, my Deathwing squad is the most under-performing after my Ravenwing.

DA are a common army in my shop i think.

More so than space wolves ultramarines and alot more.

IMO blood angels are the most common in my store.

it is really hard to put together just a Deathwing army
im currently trying to figure one out
but mainly just getting some Deathwing once my 1500 pt Ravenwing is done
so i can have a 2500-3000 pt Hybrid Wing Dark Angels army
