Cursed sons of Guilliman (somewhat pic heavy)

This is the first step in realizing an army idea I had several years back. Short version: What-if scenario where the Ultramarines lead the Heresy instead of the Luna Wolves. Not really gonna go into much more detail then that at this time. If there's interest and you want to discuss it, toss me a line and we'll talk or if people want to read my thoughts for the "Guilliman Heresy" I'll post them under the fluff section.

This is really my first real Army "project" I mean in so far as I'm planning what I'm going to do with the army before I buy models and go from there. Basically I'm posting for feed back on the conversions and the paint jobs but really I'll take any feed back what so ever.

I'm presently unemployed so I'm working through what I already have, what I can build out of my bitz box and what I can cannibalize from prior projects of mine. So, I'm starting out with a reasonable force of 1000 points presently led by Horun mainly because I have the model and he doesn't appear to be a huge point sink. This is also an outgrowth of an idea I had a several years ago. Basically Chaosified Ultra marines. When taking the pictures I broke each of the squads down into 2 five man units to make it easier to photograph.

You'll notice the Obliterates are not painted. There's a reason for this. I'm not sure I want to use those particular conversions for this army. I'm looking for other ideas. You can follow my thoughts over here.

I'm not saying all the other models are finished being painted by any stretch. But given my objective to use this army to learn fifth edition and get back into the hobby, they are playable and presentable at the current stage. I still have a lot of detail work to do. I need to paint the helmet lenses, and I have a lot of high lighting to do. Not to mention a lot of the weapons still need paint.
Anyway, yammer yammer yammer new pictures to show off. Here they are:

The Army

Horun the Blackheart

The Obliterators

Squad Hyperios
Full Squad with Rhino Transport

Squad

Combat Unit 1 with Melta Specialist

Combat Unit 2

Squad Valcian
Combat Unit 1 Lead by Aspiring Champion Valcian

Detail shot of Champion Valcian's conversion work

Detail shot of the Melta trooper. I put a lot of effort into the faces that you can see. When I assembled the Metla gun trooper I couldn't find a backpack and initially decided to attach one later. But after building the figure and painting it, I kinda like how the lack of a backpack makes the Marine look bigger.

Combat Unit 2 with Heavy weapon

Detail Shots of the Lascanon Conversion

Valcian's Rhino Transport has seen better days.

Company Predator

Here is the Converted Abaddon I built for a future addition to the army. He's not presently in use for this army, but I built him and have painted him so I'm posting pics for it.

Is that... a plasma cannon on a powerfist?

Not often I give +rep, but I think it's deserved here, simply for the awesome.

Oh, and additional rep for Fallen Ultramarines.

Now, for the customary criticisms:

1. A lot of these models look kinda dusty, for some reason. Either that or you've been washing your brushes in the same pots regardless of whether they are metallic or nonmetallic paint. try and separate them.

2. A lot of the details on a lot of these models is kinda lacking. almost all of the metals on the rhino and predator aren't done.

3. regarding the battle damage on the rhino, the areas that are battle damaged should be showing bare metal underneath.

4. in general, a lot of models need finishing off. highlights and washes (in that order) should be good.

This is a good start, and it takes a lot of balls to have a go at GW's oh-so-perfect little baby, so good on you.

I hate how much crap people give the Ultramarines, but taking an idea like this an running with it is awesome. Nice and creative rather than just hating on them. I like the "alternate history" angle, makes it much more fun. Maybe you could make a Chaos version of Calgar?

Actually that was what started the entire idea. See I had an idea to do a pure character army, where every marine and tank was named and had a history. Somewhere in there I came up with the What-if Scenario I mentioned and decided I wanted to convert a "Marneus Calgar: The Destroyer of World" Well, after about 6 months of thinking and planning I had less then a general idea, so I stuck my notes for the idea in a file and decided I'd come back to it when I had figured out a way to accomplish the conversion. I want to be able to put a Chaos model on the board across from a Smurf player and have the Smurf player look at it and say "Cool looking lor... wait a minute. IS THAT MARNEUS CALGAR!?!" But I don't want it to be just a paint job, ya know?

this is frigging brilliant! I've never thought of this before but im damn well tempted to start another army simply based on this ha! you mad-man! I love the red trim on the marines too. the mold lines to distract a bit for my taste but overall this is a fantastic thing.

Maybe add a few washes here or there...... maybe some highlights but other than that fucking great job. lol
