Vehicles roll with the strength of the weapon plus D6 against their armour strength. Equal to is glancing, and a greater D6 + Strength is penetrating. AP1 will have an effect, you can look it up in the BRB.

Infantry don't have armour like a vehicle's to penetrate, so AP determines whether or not they get a save after the wound is rolled. If the AP value (eg4) is lower than the armour value (eg 5+), then they don't get to take their armour save. If the the AP is higher, the save is allowed.

Infantry: If a weapon's AP is Equal to or Lower than a model's armour save, no armour save is allowed (ie, a Blastmaster has AP3, so models with 3+,4+,5+,and 6+ would not get armour saves)

Vehicles: AP is irrelevant against vehicles, except that AP 1 weapons get +1 on the vehicle damage chart.

As confusing and counter-intuitive as it may be, LOWER AP is better.

also AP - gets -1 to damage rolls...

AP 2-6 has no effect on Vehicals
