Hi! New to the forum and wondered if anyone could help. My aim is to have 2 armies beginners armies to play at home, to introduce friends and family to 40K. I happen to have a bunch of models already. I’m looking after my nephews during this lockdown who are very keen so I’ve bought the 9th edition core rules and dice to learn how to play.

I have roughly 40 Eldar and 40 space marines (pictured below) that are mainly older models from when I was a teen (but I have never played) and inherited from family. The space marines in particular are mainly all older models with the standard bolters whereas these Eldar seem to have a wide range of models. Before I start painting them with my nephews I wondered if anyone would be able to help advise if these models are obsolete and how to balance out the two armies as we learn how to play. I haven’t made lists yet as I’m not yet sure if some of these units are obelete and neither side has been allocated a chapter/craftworld yet despite the paint. I see there’s no eldar codex out yet either so not entirely sure what else I need to buy for games at home but any advise on what we need to do and buy would be greatly appreciated.

Not a bad collection to begin with on the space marine front, but I would recommend the start collecting box set, add a dreadnought and bolster your first born with a captain, librarian or chaplain. Take a look on the gw site, but if you want I can write up a list using what I can make out from your picture above. Not a clue regarding the Eldar (Aeldari). You can use the 8th edition codex currently available, so firstly get the codexes and have a play regarding points values and list-building. Runa couple test games at around 1000points and see how you get on :)

Even looking at your units, I can make a list around 940, but some of your models will need some work to change up to their designated ranks (iconography, paint work, etc)

Here is a possible list:

Points total- 940 (ish)
HQ- captain- Chainsword/ Bolt Pistol (?)
Elite- Apothecary- make Chief apothecary- you have the points to spare
Tactical squad- 5 marines- Plasma Gun, Sgt ( the grey units) plasma pistol/chainsword
Tactical squad- 5 marines: Melta gun, Sgt (Bolt Pistol/ chainsword)
Tacical Squad- 6 marines: Missile Launcher, Sgt (bolt pistol/ chainsword)
Tacical Squad- 5 marines. Sgt ( bolt pistol/ chainsword)
Heavy Support- Devastator Squad ( 7 marines): Sgt- Bolt gun(?) 2x Missile Launchers, 4 marines
Heavy Support- Predator Destructor: Predator Autocannon, Heavy bolter sponson x2

To run as a combat patrol you would need to lose one of the tacical squads, maybe send the standard marines into the other squads, and perhaps upgrade one into a Lieutenant.

As a start off, depending on your price range to buy new models, I would say put aside £100 and get the following:

| Games Workshop Webstore (games-workshop.com) Primaris Captain
| Games Workshop Webstore (games-workshop.com) Dreadnought
| Games Workshop Webstore (games-workshop.com) Heroes of the Chapter

Comes to just shy of the 100 mark, but would set you up pretty well, but that's my two cents :)
