I think he is a bit of both actually. He is doing what must be done in his eyes while in the eyes of the Ethereals he is a traitor. All depends on how one sees the full situation.

He's a traitor, but no one said being a traitor was a bad thing. I believe he's acting for the greater good of himself and his enclave of warriors. That's the thing about the "Greater Good" the greater good of who exactly?

I agree on the last one. He's definitely a heretic to the Tau ways, but his ways are those of the Space Marines, who generally disregard the High Lords as well. In a way, even marines are heretics, listening only to their belief in the Emperor.
Farsight seems to think in their way, and the like-minded Tau consider him a hero.

Actually, since heresy is purely a religious concept, by staying true to the Emperor alone they aren't heretics.

I like that Farsight has made the first step to breaking the Tau away from their psychotically dictatorial regime, but he needs to do more.

More power to him, I see him as more of a Tito charachter refusing to remain under the sway of the space communist block.

I would like to see them feature him in some of the Black Library books actually (not to mention more Tau in general) as the background on him in the fluff is definitely interesting.

In the Last Chancers Book (Kill Team?) They went to take out a Tau leader (a protege of Farsight called Brightsword).
Without spoiling the book it was cool to see a not-so-shiny version of the Tau.

I've always enjoyed the Tau, and everyone tends to see them as the happy-shiny space commies following the Greater Good. I've always envisioned the Greater Good to be a bit more harsh...like
"Hi, We are the Tau, join us for the Greater Good." followed by
"I'm sorry you don't see the light of our path *ZORCHPLASMADEATH* It's really in your best interests to join the greater good."
Envision landing craft and lots of FireWarriors and Crisis Suits.

Kind of like Join the Greater Good...or else.

Anyhow, in reference to Farsight, I certainly like to see how the Space Commies aren't all of one mind in what is considered the Greater Good. Gives them a little depth.

Have to admit I'm not really up on my 'fluff' as such but wasn't farsights Blade supposed to be some sort of Daemonic blade he picked up on his travels?
If true Is It not possible he has been 'posssesed' by the blade and Is being played as a puppet by the Chaos gods using him as a weapon against the Tau/Imperium?
Or am I talking a load of hungover Induced gibberish? :?

Yeah that was what I got out of it. That is was perhaps the blade of a destroyed Necron Lord or some such.

I've not really thought about this but this topic makes me think of an old saying

'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'

Farsight figured out that the Tau are pawns of the Necrons who control them through the Etherials, so he is a good guy.

I'd like to see a story about the Necron relation. It would be intense.
Oh, and Heresy is not a purely religious concept. Look it up and see.
"Anyone who does not conform to an established attitude, doctrine, or principle." In lieu of correct definition use, marines are in fact heretics in a way.
But if the Tau are pawns of the Necrons, very possible considering thier necron-like symbols and gadgets, then both sides would be heretics to the other.

It would also explain why Farsight hates/fights the Orks so much, since the greenskins were created specifically by the Old Ones to fight the Necrons. I would love to see them develop the Tau more. Seemed like everyone felt that they were just an attempt by GW to cram anime into 40k, but as the fluff develops maybe we will get to see something dark and sinister, something that actually fits with the, "...grim darkness of the far future...".

year farsight found the dawn blade on a dead world on his crusade against the orks so he actually hated the orks before he was (if he was) possessed this is actually making me think no i hate school!!!!!!!! :D

It is true he hated them before he found the blade, but the best vessel is the willing one. I remain skeptical about any actual link between the Necrons and the Tau, but GW does like leaving things very open ended. It makes the hobby so much more enjoyable when you can speculate wildly. (The two lost legions of Space Marines were female! )
