Here is my one great gripe as of late.

I like Space Marines. Dont get me wrong. I just started the Golden Hands! :D

However--With this new batch of Chaos models being released, and even before, I realize just how much Character armies have.

I think Chaos Space Marines have so much character, especially model-wise.

I think my Tau (a big reason why i dont play them anymore) have very little character.

My Dark Eldar have a a bit more, and Space Marines a bit more than that.

Nids also have a ton of Character in my opinion.

What do you guys think?

Well, originally i was refering to each model, not fluff.

More fluff wise, those armies have more character.

Nids would not.-- Eat planet. New bug maybe. Eat planet. Eat planet. Go over here. Eat planet.

Same thing though...the Space Marines have tons of character. You can do all kind of things with them and they are palates for customization. Ripe for showing off good paint jobs.

CSM, you can add pointy bits and now add all kinds of stuff.

Tau are simply cool looking. I love em. They are still one of my all-time favorite looking forces (if you're burned out on em I could take em off your hands for you ;)

Nids, Boring. I've seen a few ways of doing them that are pretty sweet, but I dunno. They don't really do it for me.

I dunno man, spiky bits don't equal character to me.

Its down to the person assambling the models, if you ask me.

Ten CSM holding bolters in the same stock pose is about as characterful as ten space marines or tau or IG all standing in the same static pose, holding their guns. Any army can look bland if you don't put any thought into it.

SM are great for customization because their arms aren't fused to their guns. There's only so much you can do with guard or Tau because their arms are welded to their damned guns. (though with tau there's lots of room to play with the suits and vehicles)

This Galahad is right on the money, people have been tinkering with Marines...well since the game began. There are plenty of ways to make your SM army unique. I have done 11 SM armies over the years each time trying to add more poses and character.

Anphicar you have your own Chapter and colour scheme which is a very good start in the direction you want to go mate.
Because almost every man and his Squig have crack at modeling the SMs there are loads of Tutorials and SM armies posted up on the net that you can look at to get ideas and ways to repose them.

Check Hephesto's resource list and the Tutorials on HO and that should give you some ideas to make them your own. :D

Vash, i couldn't have said it better myself. It is a very personal thing, and i think Space Marines have the most character, simply because on each sprue, everything is subtly different and there is no way you could make any two space marines identical unless you were looking to, and even then it would be hard. Its the same for CSM. sure each IG or tau is slightly different but in the end you will end up with pretty much the same thing each time.

Anyone with an imagination and a bitz box can churn out unique models.

Marine + Plasma Gun. Bland, possibly a little cheezy.

Veteran Brother "Oh God!" Miles, however

Characterful.

Piranhas are effective, but kind if silly looking.
So, fix them

Knives are your friends. They make joints move.
Just ask Shas'vre Jon'wu

There's only so much you can do to make a dreadnought caracterful, right? It's a bricky looking chunk of armor with arms that stick straight on and legs frozen in the same pose.
Sure

Right?

Yep, bland as dirt.

Even boring leftover sprue has character if you look at it right

Dude those Piranha's are awesome!!! Wish I had thought of that...

*starts looking at his own Piranha with a gleam in his eye*

I agree Anph, GW has been putting more and more details and intriguing options on their models all the time and they are very characterful. And as has been pointed out, anyone with a bit of desire and skill can make them even more so.

It was a surprisingly easy conversion. Just a couple plasticard spacers and you're in business.
Can;t really see it, but there's seeker missiles under the wings too.

Hell i just bought a box of the plague marines, all pewter, took a knife to a gunner because i needed an extra plasma gun and used my plastic one, used a plastic power fist on my champ with the nurgle champ shoulder, made it face straight down, chopped off the fore finger, and shaved it down so it pointed not straight down, but rolled up with the rest of the fingers a little so it looks like the PF is hanging loosely but moving with his body to our left his right, and then theres my dark apostle conversion, took a spike rack from the vehicle sprew and used it for the top half of an 8 sided star, and just the general posing you can do with models, just tried a reloading CSM recently and looks pretty awsome, its really amazing what you can do with an e-xacto knife and steady hand

Daemons what colour would you paint your Dark Apostle, cause i'm using the Hurn model with the axe head cut off and replaced with the top of the staff from the chaos terminator lord plastic sprue then replacing his other arm with the plastic plasma pistol arm from the chaos troop sprue, then replacing his head with the skull helm from the same. Problem is if i paint him red to match my word bearers he'll still remind me alot of the original Huron, any suggestions?

Im really torn between the word bearer colors red gore and chain mail, or a standard marble/black marblish with silver look for him, heres my model

Still some light Gs'in to do on the back pack, but thats my apostle, and i kno he still has imperial sigils on him, im leaving those so when i paint him, i can paint 8 sided stars over the imperial sigils

I'll try post a picture of how mine is gonna look, its kind of hit and miss as to whether i can successful make huron look like a totally different model. I think i may go for black body red shoulder pads but with boltgun metal for the bordering.
