Chaos Icons

when it comes to chaos icons, I get that they they are a piece of war gear that will need to be represented, and can be lost through squad casualties, but are they required to be modelled as being held in the hand or could they be say, mounted on the backpack?

ok, thanks for clearing that up for me
If you take Khârn and other specific characters in the book, the very presence they make suffices them as a 'icon' of sorts. So it could most definately be modelled as being stuck on the backpack of a marine, as long as it looks suitably appeasing to the Chaos Gods! :)

Basically: Make it look like an icon, and it could be attatched to the crotch piece for that matter. Which could be suitable for a IoS >_>

yeah this seems to favour the idea I had for having my Icons of Tzeentch being supported by a host of various mutations...tentacles, extra limbs, fused to the marine himself >.> all that wonderful "lord of change" stuff
As long as the icon is modeled in some way and it is understood to be the icon, it can be modeled wherever and however you want. You can, for instance, take the Icon from the CSM box and make it a backpack "banner" type..you can basically do it however you want as long as the Icon is modeled on a marine and it is pretty clear to your opponent what it is.
