The idea behind my army list is to have a sorcerer with good survivability as HQ and many plague marines to capture and hold objectives. Provide heavy support from Havocs, who will cause havoc from afar, and the defiler who can either stay back and shoot em up or entangle enemies in close combat, depending on what is needed. The possessed are there to get in fast and slaughter from within, crippling the enemy by forcing close combat.

I welcome any constructive criticism openly as this is an army in the building process and I have a lot of room to adjust as I only own a small portion of this army thus far. I am planning to buy more soon so I would greatly appreciate any advice now that it is still in the early stages so that I do not have to rage for mistakes that I have made after already buying and preparing the army. :p

Thanks in advance

Ok, so if you take a brief look at the many CSM lists, articles and the like that are on Heresy, many view a Lash list as the best competitive list that Chaos Marines are capable of fielding. This consists of 2x Lash Sorcerer's/Daemon Prince's, 9 obliterators, and usually some Khorne Berzerkers and Plague Marines. Now, im not saying this is the best way to play chaos, but I advise you take a look at what a Lash list involves, play a few games using one, and judge for yourself.

As for this HQ, you can only take 1 psychic power if you dont take the mark of tzeentch, so I would drop Gift of Chaos because Lash is by far the better power. Also, I wouldnt put him in Terminator Armour, unless you get him some Terminators to deep-strike with, because this means the Sorcerer is on foot by himself, rather than in a rhino.

If you're going for survivability, try this:

Chaos Sorcerer
-Mark of Tzeentch
-Wind of Chaos
-Warptime

He gets a 3+ armour save and a 4+ invulnerable save, so he'll take a fair bit of pain. Use warptime if you plan on combat to make the most of his force weapon. Honestly, I would stick him with a unit of Plague Marines for a lot more survivability.

Troops:

Chaos Plague Marines: 261
-7
-Plague Champion with Power Weapon
-2x Meltagun
-Dedicated Rhino with Extra Armour
Perfect :) Although I would consider upgrading to a Power Fist. Reason being, Plague Marines are Initiative 3, meaning they will almost always strike last in combat. You may as well take advantage of that by taking a power fist

Chaos Plague Marines: 261
-7
-Plague Champion with Power Weapon
-2x Meltagun
-Dedicated Rhino with Extra Armour

Chaos Plague Marines: 261
-7
-Plague Champion with Power Weapon
-2x Meltagun
-Dedicated Rhino with Extra Armour

Heavy Support:

Chaos Defiler - 150
-Close combat arm
-Twin-linked Heavy Bolter
Honestly, if your going to take a ranged weapon, you would be better off with the Reaper Autocannon. Keep in mind that you can only fire the Battle Cannon OR the Reaper in one turn, because the Battle Cannon requires the attention of all of the crew (Big Rule Book, page 58: Ordnance Weapons)

Chaos Havocs - 255
-5
-Aspiring Champion with Power Fist
-Icon of Tzeentch
-Autocannon
-Heavy Bolter
-2xLascannon
Ok, so a bit of a clash going on here. Havoc's are all about providing long-ranged firepower. I would use 2x Autocannons, and 2x Lascannons for a better result. Also, the champion isnt needed because your havocs should be nowhere near combat.

Elite:

Possessed Chaos Space Marines - 220
-5
-Possessed Champion
-Icon of Khorne
-Dedicated Rhino with Extra Armour
I would bump these guys up to 10, but honestly I would try using Khorne Berzerkers instead of these guys. They're base model is cheaper, the champ gets a power weapon/fist, and they get furious charge. You should get better results using Berzerkers for what you want the Possessed to do.

Total cost: 1488
ok, so after a bit of shifting around, I came up with this :

1500 Pts - Chaos Marines Roster

HQ: Chaos Sorcerer - 185 pts
Mark of Tzeentch; Warptime; Wind of Chaos

Troops: Plague Marines - 271 pts
6 Plague Marines; Meltagun x2
1 Plague Champion; Power Fist
1 Rhino; Extra Armor

Troops: Plague Marines - 271 pts
6 Plague Marines; Meltagun x2
1 Plague Champion; Power Fist
1 Rhino; Extra Armor

Troops: Plague Marines - 271 pts
6 Plague Marines; Meltagun x2
1 Plague Champion; Power Fist
1 Rhino; Extra Armor

Elite: Possessed - 195 pts
5 Possessed; Icon of Khorne
1 Rhino

Heavy Support: Defiler - 150 pts)
1 Defiler; Reaper Autocannon

Heavy Support: Havocs - 155 pts
5 Havocs; Autocannon x2; Missile Launcher x2)

Total Roster Cost: 1498

Ok, so some of the changes are:
Plague Marine Champions have power fists
No extra armour on the Possessed rhino
Havocs have 2x Autocannons and 2x Missile Launchers
The Sorcerer is now a whirling unit of death. Stick him with a unit of Plague Marines, and watch the enemy die

Hope this helps :eek:k:

Ok thanks for the response. I will consider this. It is good to get as much feedback as possible since, as I said, I am getting the models now and it's great to know what is best to invest my money in since I have been saving up for quite some time so I can build this army :p
A few questions however... and forgive me if they are silly but I have been away from 40k for years and when I was playing I wasn't too involved to start with so I am quite the beginner.
-Why take extra armour off the rhino? I was under the impression that they can be rendered useless quite easily if they didn't have extra armour.. is this not so?
-If I was to switch to khorne zergers how many should I go for and what would they need? I've never played zergers before since if I remember correctly in the past you had to show your allegiance to khorne in order to choose them as a troop choice and I never wanted them as elites... :p

I have another question. The chaos sorcerer that I have is equipped with a power fist and comi-melta... I however cannot find that option of upgrade for the sorcerer in the codex so I am unsure of the cost of these upgrades.... am I missing something?

Ok, so the main thing that extra armour does is ignore any rolls of 1 on the armour penetration table, so you will always be able to move no matter what, unless it gets immobilized or destroyed.

Ok, so this has changed a bit. Khorne Berzerkers are counted as a troop choice now, not elite :)

I usually play my Khorne Berzerkers like this:

7 Khorne Berzerkers
1 Skull Champion w/ Power Fist
Rhino

You will want to have the power fist to deal with any MC's, IC's, and walkers. I took out a bloodthirster with the powerfist in this squad once

These options can only be taken if the Sorcerer is wearing Terminator Armour, so you'll be able to find the cost under there.
Really, nothing at all about these questions is silly. I've been playing for a year, and I learn things about the rules every time I play. It took me about 7 games to realize that my guys needed rhino's to survive longer

Also, when I first joined Heresy, I found this article HERE to be extremely helpful to me. You might find some useful things in it as well

That terminator armour is really haunting me... >.> well guess I'm getting a new sorcerer... or converting my present one... :p

It seems that I have been away from the tabletop for too long :p At least I am moving to the UK in September and will get back into it since here in Cyprus there is next to no options of playing games or find serious gamers :p

Thanks for all the help mate :) I'll work more on this and report back with any more questions :)
