My mate runs 2 heavy cent teams - one grav and one LC. The gravs usually work out pretty respectably at 1500 points.
Obviously they don't do great against hordes, but anything with a 3+ or better armour save will get suitably annihilated.
Aside from the thunderfire cannon i'd say they are one of the better heavy choices going.
