I am coming back after a few month lay off and, as some may remember, I had an IG army in 6th edition and really started to do well with them. Well I decided to "get out" and sold all my troops, everything else went in a box and three weeks ago I traded them all for a vanilla SM army. Now I'm trying to fill it out and want to know if Centurions are worth a) taking in a 1500+ point game b) why they are or are not c) what would be better?

Right now I have:
2 terminator squads (assault and standard)
30 troops
1 Stormtalon
1 Rhino
3 Dreadnoughts
1 Land Raider (not assembled as I'm waiting on FW Minotaur doors)
1 Drop Pod
1 Command Squad
1 Assault Bike

Thanks all!

My mate runs 2 heavy cent teams - one grav and one LC. The gravs usually work out pretty respectably at 1500 points.

Obviously they don't do great against hordes, but anything with a 3+ or better armour save will get suitably annihilated.

Aside from the thunderfire cannon i'd say they are one of the better heavy choices going.

they are very very effective!! if you team them with tiggy precience and ignores cover and a 4+ invule(cant think of the names right now)with his rerolls you can usually get these powere, not as relyable as once but they can still become a very powerful bomb!.put them in a raider and they now have a 36" threat bubble..

even with out the powers they are still really good..i team them up with 2 thunderfire cannons..so i dont waste them on anything over a 4+save..they go for the MC tanks etc.

Thanks for the replies! They will be my next purchase (picked up Assault Squad and Sniper Scouts today). Hopefully my FW Minotaur LR bits will come soon so I can actually put together the stupid thing  then pack it with Centurions

I concur with oldman, aesthetically they're über shit, though don't know how they are in the game (which I suppose is more important)
It does not matter how good they are, conceptually a weak idea, what are they, baby dread knights crossed with terminators crossed with devastators. I would have prefared if they brought out terminator heavy weapon squads and a new assault varient. Anyway rant over, @ the o.p if you like them get them particularly if you think they will gel with the feel of your force

I bought them, ran them once, they ran off the table, and I shelved them. Of course this was after BT got squatted so Im sure they were trying to kill themselves from the sheer contradiction of it all.

so your saying 1 game gave you and expert opinion? sound like just very unlucky rolling.

seriously the model arnt too bad and they kinda grow on you..just take them for what they are,
they are good in the game..you need to be smart with them though..dont just throw them away they are bullet magnets..but i have found very few small arms fire bring them down..they usually go down to big things...and if they are getting assaulted well the game is going to well for me anyway.

they just need to be used in conjunction with another unit..lik i said a thunder fire is really good with them

If I were taking them, just off the top of my head, I'd be looking at the Grav Cannon option. It really depends what your list is like to begin with. If you are short on anti-tank, then there's definitely better options out there, since 3 lascannon shots per turn is just not worth 250 points, regardless of being T5 2 Wound terminators. I think, personally, that the best loadout for them has to be a squad of 3 All with Grav Cannons and Hurricane Bolters, with an Omniscope. These guys would come in at 260 points per unit, so 2 squads would probably be the max to have below 2000 points. You want the Grav Centurions to be your dedicated anti-marine / monstrous creature unit. 15 AP2 shots re-rolling to wound is an absolutely deadly prospect. That squad, combined with the 9 shots from the hurricane bolters, has a very good chance of popping 6 or 7 marines in one volley. Not a bad.

Nowhere in my post did I remotely imply that. I offered my personal experience and opinion, as per OP.

Grav Cannons, Grav Amps and Hurricane Bolters seems to be a good loadout - it's the most effective answer to Riptides and Wraithknights of which I'm currently aware. It also mulches through Terminators, which admittedly are a rare sight nowadays, and still perform well against 4+ save models. Anything with a high toughness is their main target. Don't bring them against Daemons, though
