Hey, I have a slight transport/storage problem with my IG army, and could someone answer a few questions?
1) how thick are the foam trays in the GW carry cases?
2) is there anywhere I can get cheap foam that I can cut to shape easily?

The foam layers are around 30mm (rounded up). If I remember rightly, they're just over an inch. I know because I had to measure them for my design AS project ;D

If you don't want to use GW Carry cases you should consider looking at battlefoam. They are well priced nd they have trays that you can customize and ones for specific armies.I also find that the GW cases don't fit tanks very well unless they were the special ones from christmas because the slots are all the same size.

An alternative to battlefoam is kr multicase. They do custom cut trays and stuff too so it might be worth a look.

I use a pistol case for my tanks, and some random infantry. You can find them on amazon for about $8-9 with perforated/eggcrate foam.

The cheap alternative is buy a big, empty, tough case (toolboxes work well, and are cheap), and come up with your own way of storing the models inside.
Thats exactly how I transport most of my army and do a little customization. I use cottonballs ripped up and light packed for my more delicate miniatures also most hobby stores like Hobbylobby and some local places have a few more alternatives.

But I've been using a Rubbermaid 40 Gallon toolbox and thats lasted me for a year already with no broken figures. So I highly reccomend it.
