These are a couple of pics I took with my cell phone. I live a block from the bridge that collapsed.

I drive over the bridge at least twice daily to commute to and from work. I had just driven over it about 30 minutes previous to the collapse.

It is an 8-lane interstate highway bridge over the Mississippi river right in the heart of Minneapolis.

Wow, were people on the bridge at the time?
Yes, was on the news. Bridge was in full use full of traffic at the time of the accident. Crazy stuff, a schoolbus full of children just made it accross, others weren't so lucky. Most of the people that ended up in the water could be helped more or less right away, still 4 people dead so far. And a number still missing, news said they had already given up on those.

Turns out the bridge was identified as needed replacement no earlier then 2005, city and their inspections apparently figured it was still good enough...jerk :x

Yep, 4 dead and I heard approximately 20-30 still missing. As Hephasto said, they've pretty much given up on those people. It's no longer a "rescue" so much as an investigation at this point.

Caved in at about 6:05 PM, in the middle of rush hour. Even worse, there was a baseball game starting about an hour later so traffic was increased even more than normal.

The bridge was being re-surfaced, so 4 out of the 8 lanes were closed down. This is fortunate otherwise there may have been 2x more cars and people on there when it fell.

The road is a federal highway and was inspected in '03, and they said it was structurally sound until 2020. I have a feeling this is the focal point most of the investigation will center around.
