it does have a passing resemblance to the ak47, apparently the Syrian rebels "acquired" 5000 of those old StG 44 and ammo and are using them as we speak, not bad going for a 60+ year old weapon.

Its an StG 44. The AK was not in operation until after the end of the Second World War.
Maybe, around, 1947......? :laugh:

You're not nitpicking, you're just showing your ignorance. As said, it's the StG44. The AK is very closely based on it.
What we have is the Germans getting the French to do the dirty work for them using a Soviet weapon that hasn't been invented yet.
