The Black Templars have always been an favorite of mine. It was the first Chapter that I knew of, and it has always had an warm place in my heart. Now, I am about to start an Black Templars army, as I was finally capable of finding a Upgrade sprue...

The question is: Are the Black Templars competive under the 5th edition rules? How should you play with them, and how should you equip them?

Any help and/or tips are welcome!

I would say that they are not good for everyone in 5th. most net groups will say 'no - u suck!' but I have played some BT recently and they can work well in 5th ED. You get army wide prefered enemy - which is massive in this edition ( re rolls for all) You can get shooty termies with 2 ass cannons in a 5 man squad. thats alot of nice versatile shooting. Also raiders are pretty nice with the blessed hull and old smoke rules which STILL make everything glancing rather than obscured. on a raider this is very good. EC is pretty hardcore aswell. I would just say try to keep your KP down - this is a mission that BT are very good at. Keep it mech or drop pod. so you can control your move towards the enemy moves. I would almost go for min troops (2 squads) and make the rest uber at something like CC - this is the strength of the army. Also if you want to stretch the army a bit to the realms of cheese which im sure no one would have a problem with seeing as your using a 'crap' codex, is inquisitor allies. storm troopers in chimera's a few melta's and some mystics with the inquisitor. That could help shore up some defence and claiming objectives problems.

BT, like all codex's past a certain date, get a bad press from the vocal net community. Safe to say that they can still be played well and you get a lot of respect for playing with this army and doing it well. Go for it mate.

Actually, Codex BT's won't fight alongside any army using psychic or "magic" powers, such is their fear and loathing of the Warp.

That rules out the GK's and pretty much any SM army using Librarians.

I play BT's, but play them for fun and not tournament prowess, but, then again, I love using my BT Terms to teleport in DEEP behind the enemy, giving them something to think about...

two termie squads with lightning claws, two land raiders. Rerolls to hit and wound and furious charge. Three squads in razorbacks/rhinos lasplas for objective holding. Pretty solid army.

Just wanted to make a quick correction here... The Grey Knights are regarded as an exception because of their extreme purity. They are the only models with psychic powers the Black Templars will fight alongside.
