I need to start Traitor Marines (when they are released) what is the best way to start a new army? Does the fantasy rule of troops before characters apply? or is it better to get vehicles or characters first?

Get some cool models, desperately search the codex until you can come up with some half-reasonable justification for them afterwards.

That's the way I do it, though I can see that it's not necessarily any else's idea of 'best'.

For Traitor Marines, you WILL need some Chaos Marines (either cult or 'normal'). Might be the best place to start. Once you get the required 2 troop and 1 HQ, the rest is up to personal preference.

Get two troops and an HQ. That's the best choice. In your case, chaos marines and some sort of commander, be it a daemon prince or a commander.

id write up a basic list or things you can see yourself using every time you play, like a 750 pt list or something.

once you have that stuff painted up and modelled you can start expanding your army. theres nothign worse than buying an army, plying a few games and deciding you dont want to use what youve bought, or dont like the army full stop!

1 HQ and 2 Troops is always best as thats the minimum req. From there you can do what you want but you need those first.

I like to start with troops. You get your main paint scheme going on them and then can match vehicles to it while upping the level on the characters afterwards.

Im with Wraithlord on this one, practice your scheme on your two compusory troop choices then treat your self to a tank or character.

Depending on squad sizes and army your playing (chaos in your case) you can end up with a nice painting ratio of 'one squad to one vehicle or character' for most of the army. I can get bored if I try to paint all troops before the funky stuff.

Plus in the mean time you can use a Squad Leader as a HQ untill you have decided on what your character will look like.

If they're traitor marines but abox of 10 marines (split them into combat squads later if needed), 10 chaos marines and any commander, be it a Daemon Prince, Bloodthirster or a Space Marine Master. You alwaya need 1HQ and 2Troops to play ANY game (Apart from Character fights etc.) and then, it's all up to you.
