In your opinion, which army has the best backstory, the story that's like "Wow. That is really awesome. These guys rule!"

Please don't fight to the death over who's the best, I'll have to mop up the mess.

My vote goes to the Night Lords for this one, Konrad Curze is just the most characterful primarch of the batch.

Second vote goes to Tau, simply because you can read it and afterwards not be left asking "But why?!"

I'm slightly biased I know, but I love the Lamenters fluff.

A cursed founding chapter, an aura of fear and bad luck that follows them everywhere, the fact that there is only around 300 left and that they have been involved on the wrong side of the Badeb Uprising and felt the full force of Hive fleet Kraken.

A chapter banner woven by blind crying maidens and plenty of room to develop your own fluff.

Its a winner for me!

I have to change mine.

*ahem*

The Flame Falcons. Their entire chapter exploded into flames (that didn't hurt them) in the middle of a battle, prompting an Inquisitor to purge them all, however, some escaped, and they are the basis (supposedly) for the Legion of the Damned.

Actually Dirge, it's the Fire Hawks that became the Legion of the Damned.

Fire Hawks got lost in the warp and re-appeared as Legion of the Damned. Flame Falcons were declared Excommunicate Traitoris and destroyed, though a un-decerned number of marines escaped and there have been sightings of immolating marines on several occasions.

mine would have to be the traitor legions as a whole. the fluff between all of them is simply amazing and each primarh and legion is described vividly, love it. if i had to choose one legion it would be the word bearers. the new fluff emerging for them from numerous websites and the new HH novel Into the Abyss left me hungering for more. the whole fallen religious fanatics theme is so cool to me, plus i absolutely love the fact that their chaplains turned along with the legion and became black apostles, the fluff behind them is amazing too.

Orks.

No dark, mysterious tragedy.

No Emo-tastic "dying species" garbage.

No Space-Commies For a Better Tomorrow.

Nope, none of that.

Just a bunch of nutters who find the biggest, ugliest, meanest member of their number available, get behind him, and go to punch other creatures... or each other

It's refreshing, almost Zen-like in its simplicity...

for me it is a three-way tie for first,

Thousand sons- because by all accounts they should've been heros
Death guard- because you can't read that and feel bad for mortarion (in a way he's a lot like harvey dent.)
Necrons- You really do have to read it to get it, trust me on this

Daemons and chaos get second place- great stories and characters.

Tyranids would only be an honerable mention because though their units have great fluff and they make great enemies, there just isn't enough to them to make great fluff (they are in the fluff to make heros heroic) though i wish there was.
