ok was at the GW last sunday versing some little kids and they where all defiant tht tyranid Termagants where far better close cambatants than khorne zerkers which i belive is bull shit due to the fact tht i kicked the shit outta a tyranid swarm about 6 - 7 times due to endlass swarm which was fun. and the kids where still defiant about it so in your own opinions:

who are the best Troop Close Combatants and why?


ok al go first i love khorne zerkers i mean how can you argue with 2 attacks each? tht need a 3+ to hit and a 3+ armour save its just awesome

Spinegaunts are highly effective in large broods. I play a nid swarm with like 80 Spinegaunts and 20 Hormagaunts and they usually put every other close combat unit to shame.

I would honestly say Harlequins are the greatest close combatant. Harlequins have speed, tactical defense, and deadly assualts. As long as your mindful of counter assualts you can flank your opponent in the assualt and dance forever and ever.

Even then no Harlequin squad has ever stood toe to toe with my gaunt broods and survived the catalyst rolls ;)

Death Company. Sure, they're about 30 points a model (+5 for jump pack) but we get discounts on them in certain units. Meanwhile, come on... SM stats, Fearless, Furious Charge, Feel No Pain, and almost always joined with a chaplain so there's rerolls too.

Edit: Oh, and I forgot...they REND

im giving it to a broodlord with retinue - rending, if large enough, possiblty more than 20 rending attacks (then you have the broodlords). average initiative is a 6 and when thrust into combat with big back up buddies
they are a big OUCH

Forgoing Special Characters..

Im somewhere between Grey Knight Terminators and the new Chaos Possessed. With Grey Knight Termie who cant agree that a squad of WS5 Str6 2A Powerweapon Stormbolter weilding 2+/5+ Armor save guys ISNT scary as hell. On the other hand if Possessed get anything other than a 1 on their Demonkin roll they become fairly scary and at a little over half what you pay for GKTermies. Lets see... 20 guys who are Str 5 with a 2Attack powerweapon, or Str 6 I5 on the charge, or upto 60 attacks on the charge with a chance of at least 10 of them being rending.

Yeah, but chaos gets cult units which is practically cheating ;-P

Seriously, cult units are basically elite as far as stats, abilities and cost goes. I don't think anyone can come up with a better assault unit as a troops choice...especially asince most troop squads tend to be gunline units.

Kroot are handy, but nothing like Zerks
Blood Angels get Assault Squads as troops, but fpor all intents and purposes, a standard Chaos Space Marine squad is better (except for the jump packs)

Closest you can get for basic troops goes would be Grey Knights. S6, +1 attack, stormbolter, shrouding, but overpriced.

A mob of 30 Ork Boyz is pretty fearsome to behold.

Or there's always Deathwing Terminators. 5 guys in terminator armor with lightning claws teleporting into your face can really do a number.

But really most armies aren't set up for assault troops

Bish: Possessed lose out on the fact that they're far too random to be reliable for their cost.

Yeah I'll give you the randomness of the Possessed as the reason I wont use them.. but if you do use them and they get 4+ for their roll they become uber awesome :)

I think beserkers too can't say no to WS5 2 attacks and furious charge

Bishop and I ran simulations on zerkers and plague marines, equal points of each. Nurgle simply out lasts all comers. Toughness 5 feel no pain and blight grenades. Low initiative does balance them a bit, but they have a good chance against most assault squads. You need power weapons to take them out quickly.
